I just tried to order the cooling system temperature sensor switch for my Europa Int'l G500 from my usual discount MBUSA parts dealer. It's the sensor/switch located in line of the water hose from the top of the engine to the top of the radiator. He just emailed me that the part is for a car that is not registered in the US, and Daimler/MB won't let him obtain the part to sell. This is a first in the 16 yrs I've owned the truck. I sent a copy of the registration, but the problem is that the Europa Int'l US protocol VIN on the registration only matches the last 6 digits of the EURO WDB VIN needed to order the part. I'll see what he says tomorrow. I know there are other possible sources, but I really like the 25% discount off MSRP and no sales tax with free shipping on this small part from my usual parts source.

That's who is giving me a hard time right now. I'll give them another day or two before enlisting a high level MB corporate contact to assist.

Did you have to go through the proof of registration in the US for your truck before they would sell you the part?

I just checked my records. Skyland needed proof of registration for that part and other cooling system parts from my order. They eventually accepted a copy of my title and a message explaining Europa VIN conversion to MB VIN. What a PITA

MB Germany has released the flag on the part. It is in Germany and will be here in 10-14 business days. I wonder if my truck is now officially registered in the US for future parts orders, or if I'll have to go through this rigamarole every time for non-US parts.

For $17 price difference. Oye. Dave G. $17 price difference from where? Oediscountparts and Skyland are one and the same company. I have no idea why there's the price difference. Aircruiser had to wait for his US registration to be approved by MB in Germany before the part was shipped, too.

This kind of bull from MB is why I will think twice when I'm going to get a new (used) car. I'm a firm believer in getting a used car that has gone through the worst depreciation period, and then use it (mostly) up before I sell it. This means that parts costs will play a role in my TCO calculation. The Norwegian MB importer adds an insane premium on all MB parts. The list price on the multifunction switch on a 460 was $870 a few years ago. A gray market importer managed to get me the spare for half. A new steering shaft for the 460 runs about $2000... The US price on this part is $850 or so. (Or was, when I had the G) Every year they add more hurdles to jump if you want parts for a reasonable price. The implication usually goes: If you can afford a Merc, you can affort the parts costs... The hour rates at the official workshops will be similar, whatever brand car I get... She was out last week, and the guy covering for her did not know how to handle parts orders for non-US Spec vehicles. She assured me that this will not be an issue in the future. Good to know!
