Tires and lifts

Hey everyone;

I'm going to be picking up my gwagen this week, and I'd like to ask a question that has been asked a million times already, which tires.

I find the stock tires to be too........small, wimpy, and I'd like to put larger tires on. Which tires do you suggest? I'm thinking 33's. I'll use the truck mainily for off-roading, but, I have to get there, and that usually entails of about 3 hours of highway driving. Eventually, the idea is to lift the truck by about 2 inches.

So, my question is, do you recommend converting to larger tires, 33's, and if so, do any of you recommend a specific brand?
And, I know there's a couple brands out there (OME) that have 2" lifts, but, have any of you tried them, and what is your opinion? How much does it affect torque, driving around the city, rain and whatnot?

Long term plans, include making a winch bumper and to also make a roof rack, although it is a soft-top. I really like Razon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2c6wYRLTeIo) idea of a roof rack, so I can put on a rooftop tent. The first thing I'm buying, is a on-board air system from Puma. Any other suggestions, ideas?

Thanks

P.s. It's a 1990 W461 250GD

Re: Tires and lifts

I think that a 250GD is going to be rather anemic on 33" tires.  As far as lifts go, I'm not a fan.  Especially on older Gs the drive shafts don't like the angle change.  Handling can get weird too.

Re: Tires and lifts

unless you are willing to go through the expenses of new diff gears you can NOT install larger tires than stock on the 250GD without turning the truck into a roadblock
http://www.4x4abc.com/4WD101/math_wheels.html

parts alone for new diff gears are around $800 per axle
recently heard that MB discontinued the diff gears
that would explain prices for used sets in Europe of around $1,000

Re: Tires and lifts

here is what's needed for taller tires - not only for the 35's described there

no shortcuts possible
