Engine cutting out when I stop in traffic — Help

I stopped at a roundabout to give way and my engine cut out. When I put the car in neutral and starts it has no issues starting. It starts up immediately. It’s done that twice after that and I’m getting worried as I’m on a longish trip. I went off the beaten path earlier but didn’t even engage the diff locks only drove through some mud and water logged potholes. I have done about 500 miles in the last few days so I’m worried something may be giving up. I wanted to start by cleaning the fuel distributor. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Does your G300 have a K40 relay? Symptoms sound like K40 to me.

Does the K40 relay sits with the other relays down where the fuses are? And is it clearly labelled? It will be great to get a replacement here. That’s the next challenge. If it’s the K40 as mentioned. I had to replace the indicators relay a few weeks ago. It seems the electronic components require a refreshment.

The K40 Relay is not a simple relay. If your truck has it, it should be located in the electronic box under the front hood.

I think 1995 is too early for the k40 relay. You probably have a simple OVP relay. One thing you do most likely have (or at least your G had when it left the factory) is the infamous ecco junk wiring. The deterioration of this wring in the engine harnesses causes all sorts of problems, including intermittent behavior like you describe. Do you know if the harnesses (especially the upper engine harness) have been replaced with the updated version?

RE: Engine cutting out when I stop in traffic — Help

Yes the K40 is not in the 95. The wiring has not been replaced as far as I am aware. What can I do in the meantime to get home safely? Stalling at roundabouts is not fun. I stalled on a very high altitude route and it wasn’t funny. I have checked all the relays and the ovp has 2 fuses - both checked out but one of the fuses was had a slightly melted plastic section so I replaced it. There was nothing unusual except one white one felt very hot.
Below is a link to the photos I took. Is there a part number for the updated engine harness you described? My main question is that if there’s a break I would expect that starting should become tedious but somehow it always starts perfectly fine, warm or cold. It only happens when the car is stopped or the engine is slowed down completely.

RE: Engine cutting out when I stop in traffic — Help

Another thing that just sprang to mind was one variable being the kind of fuel being used in mainland Europe. When I first got to the first fuel station they had one they called 98 Sans. As I pulled the pump I smelt it first just to be sure I wasn’t using the wrong fuel and it certainly didn’t smell like V-power from Shell. In fact I had to keep checking that I wasn’t using the wrong pump. It may well be the main issue so I’m on the hunt for Shell because that’s the only one I can trust. It’s definitely worthwhile as its fuel I’ll need anyway.

Poor quality or contaminated fuel could indeed cause what you have been experiencing.

Re: Engine cutting out when I stop in traffic — Help

This is a massive problem here. Apparently even Shell has to mix in a lot of ethanol into their vpower to comply with so called EU requirements. The fuel doesn’t smell like the one I normally get from ESSO - ‘strong pungent smell that gets your eyes watering’. In fact on some days as I fill up the tank it’s so strong that my skin starts to itch. The stuff they sell here is watered down with ethanol. My car is not vegetarian dummies!! On a serious note, it looks like I’ll need to have octane boosters next time I’m here even with the V-power. I think I should change the topic to “Nanny state almost ruined my engine”

We have that same problem here. The Farm Lobby is very strong and influential.

Re: Engine cutting out when I stop in traffic — Help

Here's a link with containing a list of suspect reasons for an engine to cut out while braking.
https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/when-i-slow-down-and-stop-the-...

One more item that I was thinking about is the vehicle deceleration sensor. Couldn't find too much mentioned about this sensor online but it can shut the engine down.
Best of luck with this.

The Guys of Precise Machinery have a good repair kit. Posting their workshop manual for download on my drop box and other ke material. Check first all electrical connection at sensors they can let EHA crazy. You dont have K40 on M103 electrical harness.

Re: Engine cutting out when I stop in traffic — Help

Gents, I drove 62 miles to find a Shell on Saturday at 2300hrs!! I topped up with V-Power and have vowed not to fill the tank with anything else. I’ve done another 90 miles with a lot of stops and roundabouts and the problem never occurred yesterday. The car stopped 4 times on Saturday during the day and the drivers here aren’t that patient! I was expecting at least one cut out as I came to stops and roundabouts on Sunday but none. I don’t want to conclude prematurely but I’d expect at least one cut out if I was dealing with an electrical issue. Anyway I’ll keep you all posted on how I get on.

Re: Engine cutting out when I stop in traffic — Help

Ethanol is a real enemy to Ke jetronic fuel distributor diaphragm , anyway as its a hard work to clean fuel distributor , change diagphragm and o-rings , i will start cleaning all eletrical distributor contacts , checking rotor , there is always humidity on M103 distributors contacts. Check also cut off relay , behind the fuse box and the coil . After that check the KE and EZL temp sender (the one on the block end) , the idlle position sender near control levers under air filter , and air throtle position - the wire/plug under KE , clean all . If nothing works ........Hans Hehl has a nice tip to check fuel flow before open fuel distributor.

Re: Engine cutting out when I stop in traffic — Help

Thanks All.... no issues after using the correct fuel. After chatting to some petrol station attendants, it appears some stations are adding ethanol into the 98 fuel which is mainly used by high octane car owners. So it’s up to individuals to identify which companies have mixed it up and how they’re labelled. Some station assistants were very knowledgeable and directed you to the right place. Something to consider if you’re driving into mainland Europe with a classic car.
