Rear bumper riddle...

Hello again,

So there's no way I'm getting my beloved custom steal rear bumper through the TUV (German DOT). I've found an e-bay where it looks like there are a couple G500 bumpers for sale.

He lists it as a 2012-2016 bumper. Which i think would fit.
He has pictured factory sticker from inside the bumper which lists the part numbers (all together on one sticker):

A 463 880 34 71 - As far as I can tell it's genarally G500 compatible. This should work.
A 463 880 37 71 - Looks like it's for 2016 and 2017 g550 and G63, which when I looks like the frame mounts are different.
A 463 880 36 71 - what i can find says it's for 2013-2016

So the mystery is why are all three part numbers on one bumper?!? He's posted picture showing all three on there. Maybe it's just to help link the correct mounts for different frame configurations?

Is there any decent way of being sure it'll fit?

RE: Rear bumper riddle...

If you have the backup sensors in your bumper, the P/N for your center section is: A.463.880.18.71.

The two end caps are extra, and ridiculously expensive!

Yeah, what the guy is selling includes the end caps and the reverse and rear fog light so it's a fair deal. I DO have back-up sensors, including on my steel bumper, but I would be willing to forgo the sensors if it meant avoiding paying through the nose for a fiberglass bumper.

I suppose one other option would be to see if anyone wants to trade bumpers.

RE: Rear bumper riddle...

Will the TUV accept a cracked bumper?  Those ought to be cheap and you can swap it back for the steel bumper.

Hi Erik,
if you have the original back up sensors, they will only fit the bumpers until 2006, as the newer sensors have a smaller diameter.

Not sure what the TUV issue is with your steel bumper?
I do have an European version of our All Steel Rear Bumper ready to go in Duesseldorf, Germany. Obviously without TUV approval, but this bumper looks very much like the original bumper, all the original Mercedes rear light fixtures will fit that bumper. All the original Mercedes bumper brackets and hardware are being reused for the install. A German G-Driver told me, a single approval from the Rheinland TUV should not be a problem.

Erik,
I have one of Karl's steel rear bumpers and it is top notch quality. One time my G was at the dealer and the shop forman asked me "Where did you get that bumper? We can't find the MB part number on it!". That should let you know how good the quality is.

Re: Rear bumper riddle...

The TÜV- issue might be that it´s not factory original...

That might be enough in Germany to not pass, you´re not even allowed to have a diffrent wheel and tire than what´s written in the registration certificate = factory spec.

Re: Rear bumper riddle...

Yeah, I'm not 100% sure that aftermarket bumpers can't make it through the TUV, but I'm guessing no because it has to do with crash safety. Untested is untested.

The wheel and tire issue is fully depressing. It gets right down the model number. You can't put G55 wheels on a G500. What I see is that most people have two wheel-sets. One for winter and one for summer and it's more often the summer wheels appear to be non-conforming, and then you can switch to the winter wheels for the periodic TUV evaluations.
