robvandijk Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | gearbox ratios I have thought about changing from 300 E to 300 TD engine, however the supplier of the engine warned me that I may have to change the gearbox axels etc etc the complete drivetrain. This because else I would have a VMAX of about 120 km/h (now is about 175 km/h). Is this true or is changing the automatic gearbox to a diesel box enough? If I cant put in a diesel engine I want to put in a 300 n24v engine with electronic injection (new mechanical injection) and use LPI. Is this also an option? which one is the easiest?

I am sure you will find some answers here about the conversions you have in mind. I myself am not so good in the gearbox department so I can't really help you a lot with your ratio question. What a coincidence that we've met today and that we found out that we have similar problems with our ABS lights and/or systems. Maybe we can help each other out solving that problem? I'll give you a call if I find out more. Regards, Rick P.S.: If you would complete your profile, or at least fill out what type of G you're driving, it will be a lot easier for the people here on P3 to respond to any of your questions.

Manual or automatic? find out here... http://4x4abc.com/G-Class/transmissions/getriebe.html Dont put the 300E 24V into a G unless you like high RPMS. The 300E 24V is a passenger car engine with a complete different band of torque. And BTW the 300GE dont run 175km/h - 165km/h is listed RGDS Klaus

Is it possible then to mount an electronic injection on to the 12v engine? and which one? Well I dont understand your issue. If you have high RPMS then you may think of changing your ratio by using differnt tires or axles. Changing a injection system may not bring yor results. My 300GE runs 100km/h at 3000 U/min with the manual gearbox, the 320 with 4speed automatic gearbox runs 100km/h at 3200 U/min. Pls specify what is high RPMS. Klaus

robvandijk Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: gearbox ratios I understand that changing feul management system (carburator or KEJetronic etc) does not change the rpms. However LPG does not work with KE Jetronic which is currently installed. This causes backfires all the time. So I either need an electronic injection system and install LPI or change to diesel engine. With 120 euros of feul every week its important to do either of the two but which is best. I think the diesel engine would be best! Problem was that I didn't know for sure whether the auto gearbox would fit the diesel engine. I think it will though, and that there will be a reasonable vmax using a diesel with the 300e gearbox. But would love to know from people who actually perfomed the switch!

Well, I know many people using LPG with a KE - Jetronic. Why should this not work? A KE Jetronic is an electronic controlled injection system. But if you have installed it already and it doesn't work, that is a different story.

robvandijk Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: gearbox ratios Sorry I have KE (continuous injection) system which is fully mechanical and will not work for long with lpg. The companies selling lpg and lpi systems in my neighbourhood will not even install lpg in my car due to the ke jetronic I need motronic or carburator.

Hi Merv, I have LPG installed on my '91 300GE and there is that annoing problem with idle while on LPG. When engine is hot and I stop for example to traffic lights, engine sometimes stops. If it does not stop the idle RPM drops to 300-400. I'm afraid i have incorrect installation. There is suspicion that the hose from evaporator to distributor is too long, I think it's almost 1 meter long. Maybe you have some photos of evaporator on 300GE with LPG installed. Thanks mre
