Hood Brace

The recent Hood Brace posting got me thinking as to how I coud fabricate my own. What I wanted was more room under the hood without putting the hood all the way back to the windshield. So with a stout metal rod that I had laying around I decided to fabricate a new rod just like the factory only longer. I noticed that there is a good bit of space left from the end of the existing factory rod at rest to the windshield. so with a large mallet, a vise, a lot of pounding and little black spray paint I made one that rests in the same area as the old one does only it is longer and goes to the windshield support. It inserts into the existing rubber gromet.

Have a look at the new angle I achieved.

I like-ee!

The more light one can get under there the better.  I almost never use the rod.  If I'm doing anything more involved than checking/filling the oil, the hood goes back to the 'screen (secure with bungee) just to get good light.  And even when I do use the prop, I often "cheat" and put it over in the corner of the hood rather than in it's hole, just to get the extra inch or so of opening.  I know that's a bad idea as an errant wind gust could cause havoc.  I should extend the rod like you did so I can get more opening without "cheating".

Nice nice.

PS - the critical feature in that design is making sure the top part where it engages the hood can't be pulled free by wind blowing the hood up.  Would be a good idea to verify that before mother nature does it for you with your head in the way!

RE: Hood Brace

Already tested that possibility and it is secure.

RE: Hood Brace

Looks very close. I may have you by a a couple of inches. The W460 unfortunately did not have the shock, so rather than making brackets and trying to fit a shock I went the cheap way.

Valve adjustments or anything else that will require a longer time under the hood I still put it to the windshield.

Thanks for the comparison pic.
