Hi, does anyone know where the OVP relay in 280GE? My friend in 280GE Cabrio is having engine starting problem. Thanks Yasu (IMG_37350002.jpg) Attachments ---------------- IMG_37350002.jpg (97KB - 10 downloads)

Do you have a remote starter switch you can hook up to the solenoid? My guees is that it is the starter solenoid that is the problem. Notice the starter is between the block anf the exhaust, those components lead a tough life. I do not think the 280GE has an OVP like newer cars. Hooking up the remote start would tell you if it is a pre-starter wiring problem or if it is a starter/soleniod problem. Good Luck

His problem is that once engine is hot, engine won't start until cools down. He replaced fuel pump and found out that fuel pump relay is bad too. I was trying to find a starter solenoid like the ones in Jeeps. But I did not see something similar to solenoid. Anyway, this G's been cared poorly previously and there are many unknown non-MB wires and relays. So, no OVP relay in 280GE? Thank you so much for your input. Yasu

If it fails to crank when hot other than the solenoid try shorting the cable from the ignition as the ignition switch can fail when hot and cause it not start. There is a an oblong plastic box with cables from the starter solenoid and ignition switch which can be manually shorted to operate the solenoid. My truck had this problem and was cured with a relay on the ignition circuit which saved the cost of a new ignition switch. There is no OVP relay on the 280 though it is a common bad start and bad running issue on the next generation engines – 124s 300e and the like. And if its an auto the lockout switch on the transmission could also be a problem - remove the cable from it and bypass to test for problems. Edited by Ernest T Bass 8/26/2006 3:23 PM

Thanks all for additional input. He has new engine starter and solenoid is replaced with it too. His G doesn't crank when hot. So, auto lockout is our next target. Ernest T Bass, Where is it located? Thanks again. Yasu

Ernest T Bass Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: Where is OVP relay in 280GE? If you get under the left side of the truck (from the back) it is at the rear of the transmission. If you haven’t already done so try shorting the wires that come from the ignition starter switch as the ignition switch can wear and then fail to pass enough current to operate the solenoid.
