1985 280 ge staring problem

after turning the ignition key I not hearing the starter motor cranking. I checked the battery with a battery tester --the battery appears to be ok. The cables/wires and wire contacts at the battery appear to be ok also. Where is the starter relay located on a 1985 280ge?
Any suggestions would be appreaciated. Thx

I measured 12volts at the small red wire on the starter solenoid. Does this mean the starter is malfunctioning? Thx

RE: 1985 280 ge staring problem

Yes, it most likely does. Naturally the big lead from the battery should also read 12-14volts, did you check that one just to make sure you do not have a bad cable or connection?

Now when you say that you have 12v at the little red wire, is that with somebody holding the key in the start position?

You could have a couple of problems with the starter. First, the solenoid could be the problem, Second you could have a dirt and grime problem that is keeping the drive gear from engaging, but you may hear the starter spin if this was the case. Third, the starter motor itself could be worn out.

Re: 1985 280 ge staring problem

I had a similar issue almost two months ago. If it is not any of the things Brent mentioned, it could be the alternator or the regulator inside the alternator. Hopefully, that is not the case.
