Re: Electric gremlin? Engine cutting out 1995 G-320

Now my problem has finally progressed to where my G sits in the garage, the ignition turns over but it won't start. Sounds like fuel starvation to me.

I was hoping for an easy fix by putting in three cannisters of dry gas last week and then one more with a full fuel tank.

I was hoping that I had one bad batch of contaminated fuel, changing the fuel filter removed most of it, and then the new filter became saturated.

Last week, some of the usual rough running and re-starts. Then after the dry gas, my wife said it died at the McDonald's Drive Thru speaker and wouldn't re-start for about two minutes after much cranking.

Then, as bizarre as it can be, I drove with my wife Saturday night over three hours round trip to a Christmas Party, one refuel, one more cannister of dry gas, all without incident. Various driving in town, highway, two shutdowns. Not even a hiccup.

Yesterday morning she cranked it and said it wouldn't start in the garage while I was at work. I just tried it just now, same thing.

Its definitely a fuel thing. Maybe the fuel pump? I'm figuring another fuel filter, cut the old one open for clues, drain the fuel tank and then find a new fuel pump. Any suggestions? Anyone replaced a pump, have a rough price?

Do you remember Brent's comments earlier in this thread?

This is the flood salvage G. Right?

Its a flood salvage...and I suppose it could be a coil, but why would it wait 9 months to act up...then right itself after changing a fuel filter. I'm thinking fuel pump, fuel contamination, leaky fuel lines (no smell though), vacuum? I'll take all theories into consideration.

Re: Electric gremlin? Engine cutting out 1995 G-320

Took the G for a ride on a day off and it was flawless with several stops, re-starts and different driving conditions for about an houra and a half until it came to a complete stop and would not start after much cranking.

Got a flat bed and brought it to robisonservice.com in Springfield.

$455 later the problem was corrosion in the electronics.

In layman's terms I can relate what was told to me. Being a flood salvage he opened up the relay compartment under the passenger glove box. He connected the ECU to a diagnotic computer and got nothing. That told him that power wasn't even getting to the ECU so he went to the relay that powers that up and found corrosion. (I'll post some pictures).

He replaced that relay and then cleaned the contacts on the ECU. Now the G runs. The ECU must have been interupting signal to the fuel pump.

John Robison recommends that I remove and clean all the electrical relays, contacts etc. The more I clean the more likely I can prevent future problems. The date stamps on some of the relays indicate that many were changed already.

So, you buy a flood salvage vehicle for less, then that's what you get.

I'm still satisfied but hopefully I will not become plagued. Turns out to be an electronic Gremlin after all.

Mystery sorta solved...thanks to all for trying to help on a difficult problem to diagnose.

Hopefully your problems are gone for good! Nothing more frustrating than having a problem and not knowing whats causing it!
