2002 G500 electrical gremlins banished?

Like many 2002 G500 owners, I've had various intermittent but annoying problems with electric windows, mirrors etc. The dealer replaced quite a few items under warranty, but the problems didn't entirely go away.

Recently I had the drivers door lock motor fail. I replaced it myself ($90), but it failed again after a few hours. I did some measurements with a voltmeter, and found that the door lock output from the door control module was stuck hard on 12v, which presumably explained why it burned out the motor.

So then I replaced the door control module. I had to buy another lock motor also. It is not as expensive as you might think - around $200 for the door control module.

Big success. Not only did that take care of the door lock problem, but it also fixed a bunch of other problems:

-Windows are no longer intermittent.
-Infra Red key signal works again, so I can close all windows from outside.
-Driver and passenger side mirrors now remember where they should be, and don't move randomly.

The old module was factory original from 2002. Part number A 463 820 09 26. The replacement is A 463 820 13 26

Best $200 I ever spent on this thing.

Thought I'd document this in case anyone does a search for info on 2002 gremlins. The only other gremlin I have left is the TC sensor occasionally thinking it's in neutral when it isn't.

Re: 2002 G500 electrical gremlins banished?

At the risk of being tarred and feathered by those who believe that any criticism of the '02 reflects poorly on their entire being, I continue to be upset and concerned that 4 model years later when the presence of these gremlins is well known, that MBUSA does not truly fix these problems proactively (can you spell corrective action - it comes just before the word "RECALL"). Your issues occurred to me on both my 02's multiple times. TC issue is fixed in my '05 so MBUSA should really have this fixed for you. And I do not think if you are the first or tenth owner it should matter. It should never have been an acceptable MB product with the consistent problem that you describe.

OK, fire away! but remember this just one guy's opinion!

Having a problem right now with the door lock on my drivers door ... all other doors are working fine.

I have similar problems with my rear mirrors too ...

You ordered new door lock actuator as well? What exactely did you order for your door lock ... b/c that's the firs thing that went on my drivers door?

Thanks.

Re: 2002 G500 electrical gremlins banished?

Missed this, sorry for delay responding.

Replacing that module and the actuator was a good fix. Never had any problem since then.

The actuator is just a small box with a plunger sticking out one end to push on the mechanism. I'll see if I can find a pic. Had to replace it twice in rapid succession, as the faulty control module was burning it out. It expects to just get a brief burst of 12V when you unlock, not steady 12V all day long.

So ... I will order the actuator AND the control module. Thanks for getting back on that ...

Looks like a fairly straight forward install ... no special tools I presume?

Thanks again.

Thought I'd document this in case anyone does a search for info on 2002 gremlins.

Ten years later, my teen daughter is now driving the car. Everything on the drivers door failed last night. I pulled it all apart, figured out it was the door control module, and typed the mercedes part number into google to see what the scoop is. And where does it take me? To my own thread from 2006, where I had presciently posted "in case anyone does a search". That person being future me. Thanks W5YK-from-the-past.

Did you have to reorder/repurchase another new door control module? I'm currently in the process of ordering a door control module and it's not an easy decision thinking it will only fail again after a few years.

Re: 2002 G500 electrical gremlins banished?

It turned out to be the connector where the cable comes from the door into the body of the vehicle. The pins were badly corroded. Cleaned those up and it all worked fine. Might be worth trying that first. The connector is blue, located near the driver's left foot (up and to the left)

Re: 2002 G500 electrical gremlins banished?

Thanks for the reply, W5YK & Ok, I'll try cleaning the connector first- I'm having major issues beginning with no longer being able to roll windows down, drivers master switch control, with lights on or off, unable to move drivers seats using contro switches on door, etc. Major PITA!

What electrical cleaner did you use?

Re: 2002 G500 electrical gremlins banished?

I used the one in the photo, but anything that says"contact cleaner" on the tin is going to be pretty much the same. Also used a matchstick to rub the gunk off. If the door control module has no power, then you lose windows, locks, drivers seat, infra-red lock/unlock. Sounds like your problem. Could be the module itself, but no harm cleaning up the connector first. Check there is 12V getting to the connector also. Can't remember which pins, but you can tell from the wires probably.

Re: 2002 G500 electrical gremlins banished?

Believe it or not:
I too had a 2002 G 500 that was driving me crazy with electrical problems.
Things like the info display in the center of the dash, the heater speed control, turn signal lamps, brake wear indicators and many other problems.
The rear brake lamps melted the plastic lenses , I guess because the were burning so bright.
One evening while on the way to dinner the alternator died.
The G was only two years old and had about 20K on it.
The dealer replaced it and I had no further electrical problems, not a single one for the 14 years I owned it, with the exception of three tiny light bulbs that died, but I contributed that to old age.
So, I would start by checking the charge voltage of the alternator. 13.4 volts should be about right.
There is no telling what my first alternator was putting out, but the new one ended my problems.

Actually, 14.4 volts is normal.

Re: 2002 G500 electrical gremlins banished?

Ordered and installed new Door Control Module. Now have control of windows, seats, mirrors again!
Door Open Warning still appears, so going to order new Door Micro Switch. Fingers crossed this cures my current (over 2 years now) issue.

Somewhere here in another thread it is stated that unplugging the micro switch will be similar to a closed door, so try to do this first - I think it´s a difficult jod to replace the switch.
