Vacuum system on dieselpumps

Hello fellow G-ers!
I have a 89 SWB 460 300GD automatic. In the garage a "new" OM617A turbo engine from a 84 W123 300TDT is now waiting. The "new" engine, which I got for 170$, is suppose to be in fair condition with 160k miles on the clock.

When comparing the two systems I have dicovered that the vacuum systems are a little bit different. My idea was to port 300GD automatic vacuum system to the "new" engine, and I have a question connected to this: The vacuumvalve on top of the dieselpump are different on the two engines. Attached is a picture that shows the difference.
The turboengine is on the left and 300GD engine is on the right. Is the functionality of these vacuumvales identical? If so: Should the vacuum lines be transferd in the following order: Input D to A and output C to B?

RE: Vacuum system on dieselpumps

I'm not sure what the answer is about the vacuum valves. However, if they don't work the same; your auto trans won't shift properly.

RE: Vacuum system on dieselpumps

Were you able to preview the donar car? These vacuum lines in sedans ran central locking systems, so some of your Y fittings may not be necessary.

Re: Vacuum system on dieselpumps

The engine was removed when i got it, but from what I have seen from vacuum drawings and picture, the 300TDT does not have a vacuum only operated transmssion like the 300GD.

RE: Vacuum system on dieselpumps

I would tend to agree with you that input D to A and output C to B. Since A & D are central in the unit. What are the vacuum lines in you GD connected to? The ignition and ???

I have an 83 turbo in mine from a 300TD but my vacuum unit is definately a different animal.

RE: Vacuum system on dieselpumps

I'm hoping for a good answer to this, Qwerty I have the same set as you show on the turbo but my engine is non-turbo. It's a new pump, and an old valve, but I developed a leak recently that I couldn't find and my mechanic found it at the transmission so now my engine runs smoothly but shifts wrong. I'm in fourth by 28mph!

RE: Vacuum system on dieselpumps

if i understand correctly you are putting the g autobox onto the 617a?
i dont know if this is ultimately a good idea since the 617a autobox is an uprated version of the standard one for the normally aspirated 617.
also the extra vacuum is linked, i understand, to work with the turbo for fuelling purposes.

Re: Vacuum system on dieselpumps

Yes, my idea was to replace my original 300GD engine (OM617.931) with a OM617A 617.952) from a W123 300TDT.
I have seen pictures of several different solutions on this, and I have gotten some ideas by measuring the vacuum on my 300GD and on the valve on the OM617.952.
Regarding transmission: I`m not sure if this is correct, but I have gotten the understanding that the W4A018 automatic transmission on the 300GD and 280GE are almost identical (even if there are some differences in operation). The 300GD is referred as 720.108 and the 280GE 720.109. An a transmission workshop here in Norway which specialize on MB automatic have claimed that the G automatic is more solid than the W123 300TDT automatic (722. something) due to more "straight carved" gears and reinforcements to stand the extra loads. And if the transmission has been design for the power from the 280GE, I hope it would handle the OM617A.
Regarding vacuum: If you refer to the EGR system, I believe it was never implemented over here (my engine does not have it).

Re: Vacuum system on dieselpumps

Hopefuly not too late, but I'm just now getting ready to swap in my 617A and borrowed the engine manual from my mechanic to get things right that I have to add in, since my truck is now M110 powered.  You're correct.  The top line on the white plastic valve is for the vacuum supply.  That should be the black/red line on your 617.  And the side port on the white valve of teh 617A's pump is going to things that need vacuum, in your case I think the brown line goes in to the ignition switch and the green line probably to auto trans or somewhere else before that, since you say you don't have EGR.

Anyway, that's it from the manual.

RE: Vacuum system on dieselpumps

If I remember correctly on my 300d, "A" should have a plastic bleed valve to help regulate vacuum pressure during shifting. Mine sometimes would have a "buzzing" sound to it. Damn, I wish I had a picture to show you! I would say A and C should corrispond.... I do have a engine pic of a 300GD with a TD install check it out, seems the bleed valve is as I suggested.

Re: Vacuum system on dieselpumps

Hei All!

Regarding the original post, were does the black vacuum line below C and D go? on the 617 engine. In the manual it just says "to the cabin"??

Thanks!

Re: Vacuum system on dieselpumps

Well if they go to the cabbin than they must be the ones for the shutdown switch.

Re: Vacuum system on dieselpumps

Hei,

I did update that information, but in that special case I am not sure how it helps
I'm pretty sure it is not the shutof-switch. That is connection D (first picture in this thread), I think!

RE: Vacuum system on dieselpumps

Sam,
The black line you refer to is an atmospheric pressure (kind of a breather line) line. It simply dead ends into the cabin with no connection on the end. On mine I simply removed the black plastic line and pointed the rubber elbow down.

EDIT: Photo removed to be resized.

RE: Vacuum system on dieselpumps

Hei Mark,

Good to read! Then I will not worry about that part anymore! Will fire it up for the first time after engine/gearbox transplant this weekend, slightly nervous
