End of production for G-class ?

As you all know, the G-class morphed from being an improbably basic, strange and able vehicle into a car that has seen 25-plus years of production with little changes in concept, dedication or looks, and a cult with many followers.

At various points I have read news about "the last years" of production of the G, and every single time they have been wrong.

Now... Does anyone have access to verifiable data about such an event? Because I have heard the rumor again, now with the GL in the horizon.

Thanks...

Well seeing as you can already buy the 2007 model year in Europe that pretty much says that 2006 was not the last year. That plus the press release that said that MB has decided to extend production....

RE: End of production for G-class ?

Another question.

Is the 461 series still being made, alongside the more plush 463? I am sort of out of the loop of car ownership, and probably won't require any car in at least 3 or 4 more years.

If so, is the 461 still as basic as it was in the early 90s? It's a tough tradeoff sometimes between practical affordability and spoiling oneself with nice stuff...

Dutch, if not to the general public, to whom are they available? NGOs, non-profits, Red Cross, UN, embassies, military/police, that sort of thing? And, when you say that, do you mean it for the US-distributed cars, or is it a general MB practice that is implemented in all or most of the world?

Thanks for the pictures, those guys look gorgeous. A little sparse, but beautiful nonetheless.

Re: End of production for G-class ?

One company is selling a brand new armored Worker on mobile.de.
Also here in Slovakia is a company called Strazan, which sells Gs and LRs mainly to the police and army, but according to their website, they are selling cars to general public too. I think I will email them tomorow to find out some details. I already saw one such Worker here in Bratislava(a construction company is using it to tow a trailer with a Bobcat), but I am not sure whether they bought it new here or it was bought used in Switzerland.

There is also one thing I want to ask. What engine are they using now in the Worker? The 270, 320 or 290. I know they were using the 270, but I think it is already out of producition.

Well, you are right, everything can be ordered - but not everything can be registered (depending on the country you live in).

Harald (or anybody else who has got the answer),

What I don't understand is why can you register a G500 in the US but not a G400CDI or a W461 worker?

RE: End of production for G-class ?

simpler than a current 463, yes, but certainly more complicated than an oldest 463's, if for no other reason than the complexity of todays engines. It appears to me from the pictures to be a stipped down interior of the most current trucks but with much the same electronics as with the current models because it's got the electronic transfer case and is ( i believe) advertised as having traction control etcetera. FOr the sake of others, I'm not making a value judgement, i'm making a statement based on your question whether or not the truck is simpler than the oldest 463's, and just the engine system would make it more complicated.

It's because they are not officially imported by MBUSA. No official import = not certified for the US/North American market.

Re: End of production for G-class ?

For example Nissan Skyline is also not officialy imported to the USA, but if you check ebay you can find some US registred Skylines there.

Federalization

If you bring it in through a "Registered Importer" who will take it through the "Federalization" process, it can be done. Cost to do this starts at about US$15,000 and goes up from there.

Re: End of production for G-class ?

I visited a MB dealership today, to find out more about the availability of the Worker(I got no answer to the email i send to that special company, and I was not able to find them on the address they had on their web site). At the first moment the guy at the dealership did not know, what I am talking about, then he told me, that the W461 is no more in production. I told him, that I am nearly sure it is still in production, so this guy called his boss. The result was, it is still in production, and availible to the public, with price starting somewhere around 40000 euro.

Re: End of production for G-class ?

G Worker Update

What I forgot to mention in my previous post was that the guy at my dealership told me that the Worker can by only ordered at the central dealership here in Bratislava. Today I had some free time, so I went to this central dealership. The bad news were that the man selling Gs (the same man my dealer had called) was in Turkey, but they showed me one Worker they had there for service (a problem with oil in exhaust). I think it was the car used by Bratislava anti-bomb squad to tow the sapper-box. It was green with two Warn winches(front and rear), a searchlight on the roof, strobelights on the brush guard and maybe it was few cms higher than normal ones. It also had a similiar plug like 230Gs Puch, this one situated in fornt of right signal light. The vin was WDB4613321X159625. I put it into the Russian vin decoder and more than half the options were unknown codes. It is a pitty I did not have a camera to take pictures, maybe they will allow me to take the photos on Monday, when the G guy should be back from Turkey.

I think it was this one, at least the numberplates were the same, but it seemed a little bit higher.
