RE: Rotzler winch

If you search the other forum, I think you might find a link from Dutch to some pix he once posted of the one that was on his truck (now on mine).  The mount is a "C" channel that goes around the front of the bumper and then two bolts connect the ends of the "C" and the bolts run from top to bottom behind the bumper.  It is removable, but it takes a wrench and a couple minutes to do, not a "quick release" like a hitch pin.  The tow pin in the front bumper goes through a hole in the winch mount to allow use of the pin while th ewinch is in place, but the tow pin doesn't figure in to teh winch mounting at all.

I don't remember the pulling force, but it has 5/16 cable on it, which gives some idea, though if I remember correctly the actual rated values posted on the side of the winch (they do give a rating for each layer of rope, which is cool) seem pretty low.  I've never pulled it agains a load cell or anything to determine the actual stall load.

Thanks Dutch!

And if we convert 15 kN to Lbf, we get right around 3500 lbf.  Go and look up the strength of wire rope http://www.unirope.com/wireropes/wr_class6x19.shtml ) and we find a tensile load limit of about 10,000 lbs for a 6x19 wire core 5/16 wire rope, and statements that the working load limit for line pull should be considered to be 1/5 of that value, or about 2,000 lbs.  The numbers here are at least somewhat in line.  Unlike some other manufacturers that sell you a "9,000 lb" winch with a wire rope on it that the rope manufacturer only recommends for a 2,000 lb line pull (or 3,000 if you get the "heavy duty" 3/8 rope).

But the simple fact is that those 5/16 ropes perform just fine in actual use because most of the time we don't put nearly the "rated" forces into the average "unstuck" operation.  And of course I'm not talking about Harald's "winch up the waterfall" Surprise Canyon fun fests, but the more common - "oops...got in over my head here" unstuck like keeping Kerr's castle from sinking into the swamp, without the ignominy of calling a Chevy to pull it out.    ;)

Sorry, end of rant.....  Let me know if I can help with any specifics of the Rotzler.  I have some nice documentation that Dutch had, including details of a heavier duty winch that was supposedly also available for the G, but it must have been on some kind of special order, military only, or just plain never came to fruition, because the only one in the EPC is the one like in Dutch's pictures.

RE: Thanks Dutch!

Fascinating info!! I'll talk to you some more about it Saturday Dave as I am the owner of one of these beasts. Probably in need of a rebuild but in one piece.

RE: Rotzler winch

I actually asked my local Mercedes dealer about it a couple years ago.  Even though Rotzler no longer makes them, Mercedes is happy to sell you one from inventory for a mere $15,000CDN.  The parts guy even mentioned that I could have it in under two weeks, not bad for something that heavy to make it from Germany to Vancouver.

All the individual parts that make up the winch housing were available too but I was told that I could fill my garage with a fairly impressive array of welding equipment for the price of enough parts to support a similar winch.
