460 trailer hitch

Here's some pics of my hitch I had made to replace the 50mm ball size original on my G. I was able to reuse the lighting plug bracket. Now I can adjust ball size and offset for different trailers. Thanks to Steve at Euro truck for the idea.

Re: 460 trailer hitch

Thanks, amzimmy here are the resized pic of my hitch. Not mounted yet though as the base plate warped from heat of the welding. You can see in the pic barely, but I didn't want to mount it and bend frame brackets. I had the shop mill it flat, now just waiting for powder coating. Any questions are welcome, Bern

RE: Very nice!

Very nice indeed!

Question: shouldn't there be an additional gusset for reinforcing?

taking in consideration the weight of the trailer (in odd position) and possible collision with rock (being lower down).

Not a criticism, by all means, just a mere suggestion!

Maybe some dimensions, please?

Re: 460 trailer hitch

I think there was a topic on this forum a while back that Garrett from Knoxville or Oak Ridge (Knoxville metropolitan area), Tennessee posted with a picture of a hitch he created too. Bernie, your hitch is neat too.

RE: 460 trailer hitch

As requested, here are pics of the 2" receiver hitch I built for my G500. For reference, here is the original thread:

Garret's Original 2" Hitch Thread

In summary, I made it completely out of 12.7mm steel plate. I did this becuase I was concerned over the geometry of the design, specifically the drop from the mount to the receiver section itself appeared as if it could induce significant moment into the hitch assembly, particularly during difficult off-road recovery operations that may impart a large amount of tension in the receiver box. As mentioned earlier, gussets would have been a good solution, however there is no room for them due to the G500 bumper. My master plan is to ultimately build a new bumper/hitch combination that will raise the receiver height, and be more off-road friendly all around, and it will match the aesthetic and functional qualities of my new winch bumper. Honestly, from an off-road standpoint, the factory rear bumper is a joke on the G500, and in retrospect I wish I had done this in the first place.

Don't be discouraged by the plate warping after the weld. It happened on mine too, and in my opinion it is just a sign that you got good penetration on the welds. Fortunately, I've got a Bridgeport in the Garage which made quick work of it.

Anyway, that is a really nice job on the hitch! More refined looking than mine. You did good! I'll trade

Re: 460 trailer hitch

One more thought on these hitches. On mine, I welded a peice across the back of the 2" receiver tube to prevent an over-long hitch from being inserted. The reason is the close proximity of the fuel tank, which on the G500 is only a couple cm away from the rear of the hitch. My thought is that if an extra long hitch were inserted, it could possibly rub against the fuel tank and eventually make a hole, or remove plating/paint and allow a rust spot to form. On my G500 it appears to be a plastic tank, so rust isn't an issue.

Unfortunately, I didn't take a picture of this safety feature.

Re: 460 trailer hitch

Garret your hitch pics were the inspiration for my hitch. I called around various places looking for a hitch, without luck of course. Then I email eurotruck. Steve forwarded some pics of a customer's hitch. The very same pics you have posted, so thanks to you also. I have no concerns about the strength of my hitch or Garret's; compared to what hitch manufactures are selling these days we should able to pull the Titanic from ocean bottom with these hitches:biggrin: When I drew it up I did consider gusseting on sides and the front as mentioned. The side gussets would be over kill given that it is made from 1/2 inch plate boxed on all sides ( I also box ended the receiver channel) and welded to 5/8 plate on mounting base plate and only 8inches tall, any side leverage strong enough to twist it would surely bend frame mount plate. As for the front gusset much the same story here. Any trailer tongue load that would bend it will wreck frame of truck, besides due to the fact that I still have stock split bumper with licsense plate in middle there wasn't any room. This hitch will gain me 2inches or more of ground clearance over stock Oris hitch, and now I can use drop receicever tongues (removed for offroading) to level for different trailer heights. One big safety improvement over the Oris hitch is the opposing safety chain hoops we have both included in our hitches, this ables the trailer safety chains to be cross hung under trailer tongue. If trailer comes off it hangs suspended off road until your can pull over. The Oris hitch has none, the only hoop my G has is 12inches offset to the drivers side, it would be ugly to have trailer come off at speed with this set up Another thing that didn't work for me was the Oris's 50mm ball, the trailers here in North America use inch not metric size balls. I know some might use 50mm ball with 2inch trailer tongue, whats a few mm less you say, lots because the profile of ball isn't the same either. I didn't feel confident to use it so I built safer improved hitch. I will post some pics when I get it mounted. Bern.

Re: 460 trailer hitch

Amzimmy your questions are welcome and not taken as criticism. When I designed my new hitch I used Garret's idea and pics and my old Oris hitch as a guide as far as strength and safety are concerned. I figured if it is good enough for MB to put on the G it should be ok to improve upon it. As I stated in my previous post the Oris has safety flaws as far as my use is concerned. So I made improved version that gives more clearance and versatility. As for bashing into rocks the old one did that too, however mine comes no lower than my tailpipe (about 2 1/2" below bumper) so don't think there will be a problem. Only extreme departure angle would cause contact. So in fact the hitch doubles as a rear skid plate and will save my tailpipe from being crushed. I don't think I would use it for a recovery hitch point if stuck and pulling from the side; I think the frame mount would give out before the hitch, but straight back should be better than Oris. (my hitch is shorter=less leverage) A new rear bumper would be better idea for extractions.

Thanks but I only drew it up on paper, a shop I deal with made it a work of art.
