There has been a bit of talk about the "Amazing Race" on the GL forum about a vehicle, the UAZ Hunter (modified and cleaned-up civilian version of the UAZ 469), last seen on the CBS show. There has been quite a bit of talk too at my workplace. I have had some people incorrectly point out my G as a similar vehicle. Speaking of similarities, does this commercial look familiar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJhh-nlf5FM

Our army is using a lot of UAZ 469s, in fact it is still the most common military offroad vehicle here. I think, it is a little bit older design than a G, late 60s or early 70s. It is a smaller and lighter vehicle than the G, more similiar to a Land Rover. Does not have diff locks, so it is not so good offroad (still better than a lot of other vehicles), but it is very simple and anything can be repaired by yourself with only basic tools.

Yep; that is right. The UAZ site says the 469 was made in 1965. According to specifications, the UAZ is slightly larger than a SWB G: http://www.uaz.ru/eng/models/nm/315195/tx/ For a SWB G, overall length is 4145mm, overall width is 1700mm, and overall height is 1985mm. It is no wonder why the four doors on a UAZ 469 are to short.

I am not sure if they are larger, our military ones are 4 door and have wheelbase about 2300mm. This civil version on that website seems to have another rear section, so it can be a little bit bigger.

The UAZ 469,actually has a worse x-country capability than its predecessor, the UAZ/GAZ 69/69a. I have driven a car where these wouldn't/couldn't follow,x-country. the only thing they had going for them was, they were "bombproof",and they didn't carry a lot of ethel/glycol based coolant(the grunts used to distill it,and then drink it?). They could also be repaired with the on-board toolkit comprising,a large hammer,a small hammer,a screwdriver, and another hammer(joke)! Dave P

I dont know, I have never driven a GAZ 69(here it is called ARO, because cars for Czechoslovakia were built under licence in Romania), most of them are nearly as old as my father. friends Uncle owns one, but it is a restored classic, which he takes only to classic military cars meetings. But it is true, it has higher ground clearance and it is even smaller and lighter than the 469.
