Mike, I had to do a similar job on my (new to me ) '84 280 GE this fall. No gasket leak, but low compression in two cylinders. It was thought to be burned valves. After Executive Automotive in Santa Fe tore it apart, it turned out to be severe build up on said valves. All were able to be re cut and used again. While in there the valve guides, timing chain etc were replaced as well. Long story short, after several hundered dollars later that I wasn't expecting to spend, she runs great! Still an underpowered heavy pig that gets awful gas milage, but a great running underpowered heavy pig none the less. And cool as hell I might add. |

BurqueDoka, I remember you did that awhile back. Performance around town I was always happy with as well as cruising on the flat highway. It was always the merging onto freeways and the dreaded Donner Pass trips that always had people behind me riding my bumper and passing me with the "evil eye" and "fickle finger of fate".

I was sorry to hear of your problems. It does sound as though several ills will be adddressed by having the gasket replaced - timing chain and sprocket, etc. One out of two of my gas engines to have a leaky head gasket, suffered a head bolt failure - broke off in the block. I am sure your mechanic will inspect and measure your head bolts as a general procedure, but you might inquire. Also, I am fairly certain there is a head bolt re-torque specification for the 280 engine after 500 miles. And, since you have mechanical values, the clearance should be rechecked after the re-torque. Best wishes, |
