| V Belt Tensioner Pulley - Advice Requested
I have a very noisy alternator that I wish to remove and inspect. To do so I need to remove the V belt. Having looked at my WIS I am told to lock the Tensioner Pulley with a 5mm pin and then simply undo the centre bolt on the pulley. My question is: what exactly happens when you undo this bolt? I don't see how this slackens the presure exerted by the tensioner pulley. Also, assuming that it loosens the tension on the belt, allowing me to remove it, how do I then retension the V belt with this pulley?

I think you might fine the pulley is concentric. |

The tensioning pulley is spring loaded. You need to use a Torx socket on a breaker bar to force against the tensioning spring. The WIS has a diagram showing you how to do this. This will loosen the belt enough to slip it off. Then let the tensioner pulley go back to its relaxed position to do your inspection ofc the alternator. There is no real need to lock it in place with the 5mm pin and there certainly is no need to remove the tensioner pulley itself. |

I'm having a little difficulty trying to get the belt off following the diagram and instructions in my WIS. When I put the socket, as per the WIS, into the tension pulley and rotate it anti-clockwise, it simple undoes the pulley bolt. The job number from the WIS is AR13.22-P-1202B for a 113.962 engine in a 463.241 truck. I'm obvisously missing something. Any helpful pointers, greatfully reveived.

Can you send a picture of the tensioner? It should be very easy to do. I just did it on my OM603.972 350 Turbodiesel. Maybe your tensioner is the same type. Greetings, Frank

Mike, Are you sure that you're tuning the correct pulley and using the correct levering point? See the attached PDF. That pulley bolt is not considered to be removable; and the tensioning device is a complete assembly - not for disassembly.
If indeed you are using the correct bolt head, perhaps you need to torque it up a bit so that it won't come loose when you turn against the tensioning spring.

Dutch, thanks for the pdf file. My WIS does not show the photo insert that yours does; indicating a hex bolt at '4b'. This was the tensioner pulley version on my truck and worked perfectly.
