KERR Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | MPG droped a lot So as most of you know I did the ORC spring, and 33.3" tall tires on 16 inch wheels. I then had the computer set to the 235-85-16 setting and im running 255-85-16's. The on line tire webpage said the Speedo will still be off 5% Before the 255-85's I was running 275-65-18's "32.1" with the computer set on god only knows what considering how my dealer is. I installed the 275's at 30K miles. From 30K to 65K when the 255's went on the G would go 275 before R light came on then 290-300 miles until it was out of gas. When I filled it up it would take 22.5-23 gallons of fuel. Over this mileage span I usually got between 12.5-13.5 mile per tank of fuel. With the new tires and new computer setting the Reserve light I coming on at 215-220 miles. I can push it to 240 ish before I get fuel. at which point I take about 22-23 gallons to fill up like usual. If I push the G to 240 miles on a tank im now only getting 10 mpg. So do you think the tires size can cause that much of a difference in fuel mileage? even if you take the 240 miles I now go on Reserve and ad back the 5% difference in mileage, that would put the G back to 252 miles per tank vs the 275 before. That would mean I lost about 1 mpg with the larger tires. Also with the new springs the car sets lever where as before it was 1.5 inches lower in the front end. Now when the car is FULL of gas ( talking running out the filler cap) the gas gauge is below the full mark. ( ill try to get a picture of it today because im out again lol... Is it possible that by the car setting level now that gauge is off that much making it read lower. Meaning that it thinks it more out of gas than it really is. As it sets right now i have been 225 miles and the needle is below the orange reserve light. So im all ears on this one! any suggestion, ideas, or things to try. I already ran a bottle of fuel system cleaner threw it. | ||

One thing that is important is to fill up from the same pump, at the same station, with the truck pointing the same direction to get an accurate re-fill. I've seen people claim fluctuations like you're talking about based simply on the fact that the corner with the filler neck was at the low point of the truck on one fill up and on the high point of the truck on the next. Even more important than the other though, is to find out your odometer error by checking against GPS. Of course, it's too late to check it for the old tires, but at least you'll know your calculations are right on the new tires. If you look at the ODO on the dash and the gps, then drive until the GPS is 10.0 miles different, you'll know the percentage error with very little math. If the GPS reads 10.0 and the car reads 10.4, then you have +4% error and need to subtract 4 miles for every 100 the car odo tells you that you went. If the car says 9.8, then your error is -2% and you need to ADD two miles for every 100 the car says you went. And last of all, average at least 5 tanks of driving before you make any claims or get worried about fuel economy. It's my initial feeling that the tires shouldn't have made that much difference. But if you were already near some kind of tipping point, such as the tires are just enough bigger to keep the transmission from being able to use overdrive as much as it did before in normal driving, then yeah, 1-1.5 mpg could be observed. -Dave G. | ||

You think that would cause the probelm. I want those Hutchinson wheels but i dont have the money for them. When i called they said they where like $899 a wheel! Pimp for sure... maybe if i sale that supra | ||

Present: Germany Vehicle(s): 2000 g500 Posts: 1887 | Re: MPG droped a lot going to 33's with my 17's from the stock 31's on 18's, i haven't done the math yet... just estimating, but doing the calculation based on actual miles (correcting the speedo mileage) and actual gallons, it looks like my mileage might have dropped by 0.5 but not much if you ask me. City seems the more worse, but highway might even be slightly better. | ||

There are just over 45K on it. I have recently noticed a gradual increase in the milage, up from the beginning of 15mpg on the road to nearly 18mpg at the last check a week or so ago. And I was careful to top it off at the same spot. City has constantly been around 12mpg. Maybe the G is getting a little looser! I have a set of 16's all newly painted and ready to go, but the 18's must be made of some very tough rubber, they just will not wear out as there is still 1/4 inch on them. | ||

Wider tires will have more resistance, increasing the consumption. Check your tire pressure. Too low pressure will increase the consumption. Also, colder weather will mean a colder engine with longer time running on fatter fuel/air mixture = increrased consumption. Lots of cold starts will also increase consumption. Consumption on a 230GE can go from 11L/100km to 25L/100km with hot versus cold engine. Curiously enough, my car runs much better and has much more power in cold and wet weather than in nice hot summer weather. Johan-Kr Edited by Fenalaar 12/1/2006 6:28 PM | ||

The effect is really obvious with supercharged or turbo motors... likewise the decrease in power on force fed motors on hot days is more noticeable. | ||
