2005 AMG G-class recall

If any of you have a 2005 AMG G-class you might want to check out this recall I came across regarding defective return fuel lines.

Hey that happened to me!

The fuel return hose at the tank became cracked and permeated with fuel!

Of course it happened after the truck was 26 years, three continents, and 330,000 miles old......and the guys who designed this one way back then at least had the foresight not to put it over the exhaust pipes.

I noticed the little puddle on the ground one day and replaced the line in my driveway.  But hey, maybe I should sue or something.....

Don't be too sure. That section they replaced looks exactly like the setup in my 1996. Given that it may be in all the recent 463's. Maybe the AMG version just fails early enough that they felt they had to recall it.

Re: 2005 AMG G-class recall

The way this stuff usually works is that a defect is observed in the field, traced back to a responsible supplier, the supplier finds a root cause for the defect that was effecting products during a defined period of time, and the auto company traces the suspect materials back out to the range of effected assemblies.

Having seen the G assembly line, I too would have trouble believing that a fuel return component common to all 463s could be traced to going into only AMG's.  Is it possible that this is a component that's modified, changed, or spec'd by AMG specific to the 5.5 engine?  Maybe "a" hose is there on all 463s, but the AMG hose is bigger diameter or something such that it's a different part number than other 463's get?  Or maybe the AMGs run higher fuel pressure that effects the common component in a different way than other 463s would, stressing it beyond a limit that other 463s don't approach?.

I'd hope that the above is the case because the alternative is the cynical view that they're only required to recall on the product where the defect manifest itself and that they're waiting to hear complaints on others before recalling those.  May be cynical, but it's reality in a lot of cases.  :(
