Since I am no longer allowed (read "banned" ) to post on that forum, I'll respond to his request here; since he frequents both places. Attached is the official price list for the M-B Cross Country Vehicle (read Geländewagen) and all available civilian accessories in January 1984. Prices are in Deutsch Marks, which were about DM 2.75 = US$1.00 at that time. Interesting reading. Attachments ---------------- 1984_G_Prices (2).pdf (644KB - 70 downloads)

So, the truck was not expensive but some paid more than others for it. I imported my first 300GD in '86 myself (well, I was one of the grey market importers) - with full options, customs and shipping I paid $18k

If I remember correctly, Europa would take the price in DM and put a US$ sign in front of it. If it sold for DM 50,000.00 in Europe, Europa's price in the US was US$50,000.00. Not a bad markup.

I sold a bunch of 190SL parts to a guy in California that is assembling cars to ship BACK to Germany. He sent 60+ cars last year. Mostly various years of SLs. I tried to get myself banned on BW a few weeks back. It didn't work. Now I want to be the moderator so I can mass delete all the posts by people too stupid to read the owners manual or use the search function. Edited by mb230s 2/15/2007 11:08 AM

I think a Blazer/Bronco back in 84/85 was around 10k. Mike

I posted what I was told when I bought truck that original owner paid $107,000 for truck. I have no proof one way or the other. Got my New/used truck Thurs in Ct. with my 2 daughters and wife. Drove it to upstate New York were there was 30-40 Inchs of snow, then back to NJ. Over 500 miles in the 3 days. Friggin fell in Love with truck. Reminds me of my old S classes of the 80's. Just a friggin tank. SO, I am pretty sure I will not be driving my old G that much. (Supposedly it sold on Ebay, but buyer hasn't responded back to me soooooooooo.............) Again, thanks Dutch for price list.

Dutch, I've always presumed that you took delivery in Europe and then drove around prior to importing (based on some of the pictures you've posted in the past). Is that assumption correct and if so how long did you take for your driving vacation?

There were a million and one Federalizers - many of whom would falsify documents. These falsified documents were the main reason that the DOT clamped down and set up the R.I. program. The work was done on my 280GE in 3 days. It took a couple of months for the paperwork to pass through the system; but I was driving my G under bond the minute the Federalizer finished tightened the last screw. Dutch, I've always presumed that you took delivery in Europe and then drove around prior to importing (based on some of the pictures you've posted in the past). Is that assumption correct and if so how long did you take for your driving vacation? Yes, I ordered it from and took delivery through the MB Factory Showroom (Niederlassung) in Stuttgart. It took two trips - one to order it and the second (delayed due to a European Machinists' Union strike) to take delivery. The maiden voyage was a week to 10 days, possibly 2 weeks - I don't remember for sure. There was no minimum driving time or mileage required to be able to bring it back to the US. All that was required was a Customs Performance Bond which mandated the Federalization be completed within a specified period of time - 6-9 months, if I remember correctly; and a Customs Duty payment of 2.5%. Those certainly were the good old days. As an aside, I have long since pitched all the price lists I used to have from Europa Int'l in Santa Fe; but as my very leaky memory recollects, they were charging something like $50k-70k for a similar vehicle. Certainly not the $100k plus that people seem to remember. I don't think the $100k type numbers came until the W463's. Russ could probably tell you for sure; although he was not yet involved with Europa Int'l when I brought mine in. Dave Holland handled everything, except for the wrench work in the back bay down the block. Even Anthony wasn't there yet.
