Tire size on a G 55

I am trying to find out if any one was successful in putting 285/65/18 BFG AT KO on a G 55. I had them on briefly (300 miles) and they rubbed but I loved how the truck drove. I do not want to lift the truck but would like better all season and bad traction. Cooper zeon is very good but I would like a little more shoulder. Any thoughts?

You shouldn't really have to "lift" the truck in the sense most people refer... though putting g500 springs might be required. I think somebody here (maybe you) said that the 55's are specifically lower, so the 500 spring might be all you really need.

Before i recommend this i should probably ask where they rubbed and under what circumstance? Trailing arms vs. Fender Liners. I don't think trailing arm rubbing would be any better but fender liners should benefited. There's also the "trim packer" option which only lifts the truck about 3/4" ... which is quite little. I'm running that equivalent tire with et35 rims so they stick out 15mm more from the wheel well and i can get a little rubbing in the fender liners under more stress, but it's never been an issue including doing some pretty tricky offroading in death valley. I'm quite clear of the trailing arms becuase of the reduced offset. It's the et63 that i think would rub on the arms and not the fender, so you might just need the ride height of the 500 to get you in the sweet spot with you et50 rims.

Have you tried the nitto's terra grapplers or Toyo Open Country A/T's? They're 1 inch shorter or there about but still 285's.

I have not tried the terra grapplers or the open country. Ideas on which is a better snow and sand tire? I just love the 16" BFG AT KO on the SWB with the Atik wheel because it rides and handles so well. Thoughts.

Re: Tire size on a G 55

I've seen the toyo's (however siped on occasion) on a number of vehicles up in the mountains (where they get lots of snow). They both have a reasonably open tread, supposedly they're pretty similar contruction (according to Thai). The nitto's may have a little softer sidewall according to one fellow over on benzworld, so they might be comfier but i would imagine durable enough if you not in sharp rocks much. Either one should be pretty good, siping should make them all the better. If i wasn't comfortable with my existing setup i'd probably try out siping... nobody down in the valley does it though so i'd probably have to find a shop up in the mountains to do it.

Re: Tire size on a G 55

Marco,

If you want to stay in the BFG line i dont blame you. Awsome tires. I looked at the specs on that tire and it says its

Tire Weight, 60 lbs

Rim Width, 8-10

Overall Diam. 32.8"

Sect.Width 11.5"

Revs per mile 634

Now if you scroll down on BFGs web page they have a 265-65-18 listed. Its just a little smaller in all account but should fit well on the G.

Tire weight, 56 lbs

Rim Width 7.5-9.5

Over all diam 31.7"

Section width 10.7"

Revs Per Mile 656

I cant look up the stock specs as i dont know what the tire size is.

Re: Tire size on a G 55

Shaun and Erik -

Thanks for your help. I have ordered Toyo Open Country in 285 60 18 based on recommendations and the fact that if the electronic nannies do not get me with the BFG 285 65 18 the garages in NYC will decapitate the 55 so I will let you know how these stack up against the BFG on the swb.

Thanks again.

Marc

Re: Tire size on a G 55

I have Toyo Open Country A/Ts on my G500. They work well. On the wider G55 rims and w/ wider fender flares they would work even better.

Toyos are killer tires too. That all my buddys run at RPM off road. He has them on his H1, his rover, and his 4 diesel rams...

I looked into them but i could not find skinny ones like i got with the bfg's....

Hey, no problem. A good day is when I read things from you once. Three times is thrice as lucky. Be well, my friend.
