Dummy cover for ashtray

Did all Gs have an ashtray ? Just curious if some had a cover for the hole versus an actual ashtray. Seems like a great place to install switches or small 2-way radio, instead of a place for something that doesnt get used.

RE: Dummy cover for ashtray

The space is pretty shallow.  But I say go for it! and if you could find one of those remote-faceplate ham radios that would let you fit the face plate there, that would be cool too.  I had a Radio Shack CB that was small enough to fit in the ash tray opening, but was too deep and stuck out an inch or so looking silly.  Besides... I do enjoy the odd stoggie on the ride home.  :^)

Ahhh, forgot about the depth issue....idea backburnered. Occasional tobacco enjoyment defaulted to cupholder and Diet Pepsi can.

Mine is not that shallow. It has nearly 3" of clearance under it.

Re: Dummy cover for ashtray

Since it was so easily removable, I was thinking of making a custom cup holder that slides into the same hole, but then can be replaced again with the standard ash tray.

Umm - not a bad idea if you don't smoke, Chuck...

Why not get an ashtray from an old scrap G, remove the front and mount a cup holder on it? That way, you have the basic fit just right.

RE: Dummy cover for ashtray

I seem to remember a mod of this type in a G 280 way back in the 80s, it was found that a series of switches and warning lights were required and the ashen becker came into the solution.

RE: Dummy cover for ashtray

Mine had some kind of stereo equalizer in it. It was a perfect fit but I was not after a boom box G. So the ashtray is back.
