Even MB can't get it right

Mercedes has released a music compilation called simply Mixed Tape to listen to while driving. This is the text that accompanies the tape:
The GL-Class
Refined power: the luxurious GL-Class combines comfort with adventure for an entirely new motoring experience. First class all the way - on - and off-road!

If this is the new GL - then LONG LIVE THE GL!

Here is the cover:

RE: Even MB can't get it right

I submit that  "MB" didn't get it right, wrong, or otherwise.  Remember, MB exists only as a brand name now.  You're dealing with DCAG, and maybe not even them in a case of the cover art for some goofy CD that's probably farmed out by one of the marketing groups or some contractor thereof who doesn't know a G from a hole in the ground.  The only thing odd to me is that they chose model-specific artwork rather than a generic one that buyers of any model could identify with.

I guess "odd" isn't the word I'd choose.  Sad maybe.  Certainly not Surprising.

Oldsmobile (before they cashed it in) used to have an ad slogan that "It's not your father's Oldsmobile."  If DCAG keeps building Mercedes that are "Not your father's Benz" they'll share Olds' fate.  And don't think it can't happen.  Olds was one of the first guys in the auto business.  He participated in the first "race" on Daytona beach in 1903 or somethin.  Another long and proud automotive history that fell victim to the brand hucksters.  It can happen to the best of them.

Or maybe another ad logan...."MB - we don't sweat the details"

We'll see....

-Dave G.

Now here's a fun thread....what 5 songs would be on a CD you'd choose to portray YOUR g-wagen lifestyle....  :^)

Air on a G string

Talking of slogans, Albion used to be a great truck maker in the UK 40 years ago, their slogan was, " As sure as the rising sun and we never fade" they did when they whent in with Leyland.

The quote is unfortunately specific to the cover. And while MB undoubtedly farmed it out, they would of

a) had to provide the artwork
b) sign off on the final item

So the mistake really is unforgivable

Now here's a fun thread....what 5 songs would be on a CD you'd choose to portray YOUR g-wagen lifestyle.... :^)

Well there are lots of song's specifically about the G. Eric Clapton (don't remember which), Macy Gray, Jamoroquai (i think) and countless rap/hip hop songs.... sure there are a lot more but can't think at the moment. Not sure I would listen to half of them though...

Depeche Mode: Behind The Wheel
Depeche Mode: Route 66
Depeche Mode: Never let me down again

Lot's of different EBM (electronic body music), some german industrial...

p>Now here's a fun thread....what 5 songs would be on a CD you'd choose to portray YOUR g-wagen lifestyle....  :^)

Two songs would describe me and my G..."Creepin" and "Cant get enough". If I had to mix my own music that best describes my G would be:
Beatles...."A little help from my friends"
38special..."Hold on loosely"
Vanity Faire..."Hitchin a ride"
and lastly
Sammy Hagar..."I cant drive 55" (45 maybe)
Mike

P.S. I always have this vision of Roughneck playing "Yakity Sax" (Benny Hill theme) in his workshop while he is gutting out a G or the like.

The G is farmed out; built by contractor Magna Steyr.

Not at all - the G was built in partnership with Steyr Puch who already had the experience of building such capable off roaders as the Haflinger. It was even marketed as a Puch in some areas.

RE: Even MB can't get it right

Beach Boys - Little Honda: For going uphill on the motorway
Darkthrone - The cult of Goliath: For smoking BMW M5's in 20 cm of fresh snow
Anything loud with lotsa treble: For going faster than 60 km/h. Turbo and 3" unmuffled plumbing cancels any bass.

Actually, the G is it's own roadmovie soundtrack. Suspense! Thrill! Horror! Romance!

That is true - often I will drive with the stereo off just to listen to the engine... and that's only with a G300. How it must be if one has a G55K!

Though the 55K is loud it always brings a smile when I start it up. As for a soundtrack how about
Janis Joplin - Daddy won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz?

I know about Puch. The G has always been built and developed by a contractor, past or present, it doesn't matter which company's name you use, the G was "farmed out" . A contractor placed the MB name on it.

As is Chrysler by that token...  a contractor can be replaced with another.

That is so coincidental!  Here is what I currently have in my G music selection: Best of Depeche Mode Vol 1, Erasure I Say I Say I Say, M People Elegant Slumming, The Best of New Order, and Pet Shop Boys Discography.

Are we showing our age as a product of the 80s? I too must admit that in my G music collection I have some Depeche Mode, Roxy Music, Talk Talk, Stranglers and Alison Moyet/Flying Pickets. But the rest is a mix including Seals & Croft, Isley Brothers, Van Morisson, Supertramp, the Waterboys and for those who know them - Stephan Pompougnac, Pink Martini, Burton Cummins and the Guess Who, Neil Young and Live Rust, Chilliwack and of course Cello Suites for those late night drives.

I saw New Order (well whatever was left) play last live year at a small venue. They were great.

Also have to say that the G (GL ) Album from MB isn't too bad.
