I went to take a closer look today, it is a diesel, unsure on year and other details as the guy w/ the info was not in. All I know is a gentleman in Santa Fe bought it around ten years ago and has been slowly building it up as a camper. It suposedly has less than 500 miles on it, could not confirm that as it has digital odo. The shop here in Abq is going to outfit the interior. From what I understand, it's for sale. I'll get more info next week when the guy at the shop returns. Pretty cool, except I can't imagine cutting up a diesel G. It is a really cool project though. There was one like this sitting in the shop for several years that was being built up for him as a camper.

Pretty cool though. I also like the one that someone had posted pics of that was at Orc. Edited by Maxwell Smart 3/9/2007 8:39 PM

So no cutting of bodywork involved, just the building of the box at the rear. It's obviously a 461, not just because of the interior but also of the fact that the air intake is to the right of the engine (contemporary 463 diesels have the air intake to the left). Obviously it has been cosmetically converted to look like a 463. The "uncovered" transmission tunnel is typical of military versions of the G. I stand to be corrected but I think that that instrument cluster was never fitted to the naturally aspirated 290 GD but to the turboed 290GDT. I would bet that it is a 461322 then. Somebody must have paid (or will have to pay) a small fortune to get that beauty federalized in the US of A. Edited by mortinson 3/13/2007 8:33 AM

If you look REALLY close you'll notice the B-pillar trim piece in picture #6, which is the one for LWBs. Concidering federalization, maybe they're using the norwegian trick? Tax authorities: "That's your $250.000 2005 G55 AMG? Well tax you 'till it hurts then" Lucky owner: "No no no, thats my 1979 230G, it's just got a new body, a bit upgraded interior, new drivetrain and a new engine. Wasn't more than $20.000 new, not worth much now" Tax authorities: "Well, as long as you've got the chassis# to prove it that's fine with us"

I think the reason that they don't do it more on the G's is because of the way the frame is stamped with the VIN, but there are ways to remedy that too, though . I have concidered doing that many times, but it rides the fine line between legal and illegal too close for my tastes. Cheers, Ben Edited by Merz-Ben 3/13/2007 11:34 AM

I think the reason that they don't do it more on the G's is because of the way the frame is stamped with the VIN,.... LRs are stamped too. The reason it's more common with LRs (and it's not too common with them either) is that lots of LRs were sold here legally more than 25 years ago and have titles from that time. You don't see this with Gs because there are far fewer Gs over 25 years old, and those were never imported on a large (dealership) scale like series LRs were. East Coast Rovers actually got slapped pretty hard by the feds for doing this on even a very limited commercial basis. All of this is not to say at all that there's anything questionable about the truck with pictures shown above. Dave Holland is a lot of things, but he certainly had the resources to legally import the components for his personal vehicle. Especialy in his line of work, he had too much at stake to do it other than legally on the up and up. -Dave G.
