| Disabling SOS
I have a 2002 G500 and I keep having failures of the SOS antenna which I am told is located above the right front headlamp. It gets saturated with water or encased in mud and gives up the ghost. My dealership tells me that there is no way to disable the system, but I'm sure it's possible through programming or coding of the vehicle. Does anyone know how to disable it permanently? |

Nice!!!
Personal Experience... Clean that stuff while it's still wet. It's a real pain to get it clean once it dries. Even worst once it's "baked in". |

Personal Experience... Clean that stuff while it's still wet. It's a real pain to get it clean once it dries. Even worst once it's "baked in".
It's clean now. A friend of mine owns a detailing shop and he owed me a favor. It took him a week to clean it all. I think I owe him now. |

Yea... I've only got one spot that I never cleaned...
I still have a layer of mud inside of the A/C vent on the driver's side. When people ask me if I "really" take the truck off-road, I adjust the vents and let them take a look at how dirty it's been before. It also shows how well you can clean these trucks up.

I had mine disabled - no "1 Malfunction" warning either. It was done via the StarDiag laptop.
Most of the system is under the passenger seat. 4 allen head bolts and the seat can be tilted backwards w/ plenty of room to work. Try disconnecting it - see what happens.

The Teleaid system has three antennas. The primary one is the short stub on the roof, at the front. The secondary antennas are in the rear bumper, one on each side.They look like thin squares of plastic, about 100m each side, with a cable running out the side, mounted inside the caps on each side of the rear bumper. The rear ones are prone to fall off if you do a lot of bumping around on bad trails. I replaced both mounting brackets several times already.
The antenna above the driver's side headlamp is the GPS antenna for the Nav system.

I am guessing that they are positioned so that there is always one antenna with a direct view towards the cell tower, ie not obscured by the body of the Gwagen. Also, separating them reduces the likelhood of damaging all of them in one collision. I'm guessing though. |

I had mine disabled by not paying the bill i guess.
A few months ago, oh probably 6 my G just decided not to do a damn thing. I turned it off went into sub way ate luch came back out and NADA.. the radio worked but the key didnt. So i pushed the SOS button to have some one come pick it up. It dialed some phone number then said " the number you have called is not aworking number," Then it said if you would like for bla bla ( the techinical name) to work your payment of $198.50 is due.
Oh a side note i would like to have it work just incase im some place my cell doesent work... guess i need to check into that. |

That is just the silly thing about the service. It is a cell phone based service.
And analog based at that, so it won't work much longer; and the new digital based ones won't have as good of coverage as the old analog systems. See here for more info:

If it makes any of you feel better, before the silver 02 died on the road (just stopped completely the day after it had the $1500 analog digital update), I pushed the Teleaid button. Everything worked great BUT the Henry Hudson Parkway on which the vehicle stopped is not a road that Teleaid services! I said wait a minute MB Manhattan is up and down that road all day long. Sorry can not help. So I got a lift back to my house got the 55 and towed it onto a street in front of my fathers and called Teleaid again. That was the last time I saw that vehicle. MB came and took it away and I towed it not more than one mile. Seems that having Teleaid does not help you on all roads. |

I believe the antennas in the bumper are backup antennas. They are there in case the vehicle rolls over and smashes the antenna off the roof...something that is likely to occur, in a roll-over accident.

You do realize that if you cell phone doesn't work, then there's a pretty good chance your Teleaid won't either?? I've watched the dismay on people faces a dozen times over when thier Cell doesn't work, but then they think "but I've got OnStar" HA HA Ha ha ha ha ha...GM's done a fine job of brainwashing owners into thinking that OnStar is a satellite based communications system. Same for TeleAid.
Get a Sat phone, or even better, a Ham Radio license and radio. Both are far more effective if you truly get out in the boonies and need help, or if you need to communicate during a widespread civil emergency situation, or when SHTF and there is another major disruption of the US public switched telephone network (PSTN), a large scale power outage, seriously bad weather, or if the end of the world approaches. Around the mall though, I guess cellular-based Teleaid is probably easier to use.
