A Trip in the Empty Quarter

Just a few pics of a trip I lead two weekends ago through the UAE's part of the Empty Quarter. As you can see we had a bit of trauma, though this old Nissan Patrol drove out after being righted. It is a truly beautiful landscape but it requires respect.

Mike.

Nice photos. I especially liked the one of the camels. Thanks!

Beautiful photos, the first one makes me homesick! I guess you didn't meet any Saudi/Omani border patrols..they make for interesting incidents!

I liked the camels as well - they demonstrate so nicely that it is important to have a wide "foot print" in soft sand. Big soft wide feet for them - wide soft deflated tires for us.

What was the story on the Nissan Patrol (Safari)? Was I correct on the make and model of vehicle in the second pic?

That is definitely a GQ Nissan Patrol. My father went through three of them back in the 90s. They were never delivered in that colour though.

RE: A Trip in the Empty Quarter

You're right about the type of Nissan Patrol it is. It's currently being repaired, which involves just body work - mechanicals were unscathed. It happened as a result of the slip face collapsing under him as he tried to steer off it down the fall line. The rear wheeels started to slip sideways and after that it was a forgone conclusion that he would roll. All traction had gone, almost like being in a mini avalanche. The picure below shows the scale of the dunes out here - if you look closely on the right hand side, about half way up, you will see a group of 5 cars heading down to the sabkah flat.

Re: A Trip in the Empty Quarter

I should have also mentioned some of the specs on the Nissan; front three-link (like the G-wagen), rear five-link, optional rear diff-lock. With factory fitted remotely operated front sway-bar disconnect it would ramp over 1000 from the show room floor.

Very tough, almost as strong as a G-wagen, with much of the driveline and chassis shared with the 4-tonne Nissan/UD truck range.

Prices ranged from the mid fourties to around eighty thousand Australian Dollars.
