nomad Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Insurance Co. wants to write off my car Simply because the useless bastards can't find a few bits for the front end Structurally, the only repair needed is right side bumper mounts, which are a little bent The rest of it is bolt-on stuff, hood, bumper, 1 headlight, grille+insert, under-headlight trim+headlight wiper arm They're only saying it's a probability at the moment, but I'm not giving up There is no way I'm letting my Panzr be broken up for parts, while I'm left with barely enough cash for a decent 190E, it's only 200,000km young for god's sake! Where the hell would I find another car as good, for the price I paid and in 040 Black? In New Zealand? I don't think so I've been quite content to be without my 500 for the last 2 weeks, confident, because I thought it was all taken care of, no worries I thought, though after hearing the chap from the insurance company say there is a high possibilty that it will be written-off as a 'Total Loss', I'm in disbelief and can't quite describe my thoughts right now, needless to say I'm not happy Yes parts are hard to find down here, but, not that hard! What a nice, positive first post aye? Edited by nomad 5/1/2006 7:39 AM

I agree, your W126 is very cool. Probably one of the best that I have seen. I wish you the Best of luck Nomad. Your car is very beautiful. I would hate to have you lose it.

nomad Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: Insurance Co. wants to write off my car Thanks folks Things aren't finalised yet, so like I said, I haven't given up I spoke directly with the panel shop this morning and was told hope is not lost as they're now broadening their search for parts by looking outside of the insurance companies usual suppliers (with their permission) Though I've decided if they can't souce the parts, I won't let them take my car and auction it off to a wreaker yard, I'll drop my claim and fix it myself, no problem...I hope I sure appreciate the kind comments, but I don't deserve any sympathy, as it was my fault this happened in the first place The car I had a ding dong with has already been written off, the off-centre rear impact caused the chassis to buckle, the rear of it looked ok but the side of the rear fender had caved in and there were ripples in the roof from one side to the other, the doors were mostly ok as they had popped out of place and were sitting ajar I feel bad for the guy but, he got paid and is happy NZ Benz, my co is IAG/State Cheers, Damon Edited by nomad 5/2/2006 4:19 AM

Your insurance co. needs a rocket up the arse if they disregard all reasonable part supplier options - could be a bloody conspiracy - maybe they want your car (as a parts donor) to fix other claims.!. There again...could this mean a 280SEL resurrection opportunity?. (I'm on your side mate) Dennis

nomad Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: Insurance Co. wants to write off my car Taking the money and doing an awesome workover of my 280 sounds like a great idea, though not great enough to sacrifice my 500

nomad Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | RE: Insurance Co. wants to write off my car Finally after 4 weeks, I have my 500SEL back from the bodyshop What a feeling to drive after the roughness of the 280SE's engine and Cherokee's ride and handling She's almost complete, I just need to paint the new headlight wiper arm and maybe re-attach my DIY airdam

I just read this thread through for the first time and nearly had a heart attack!!! Here's to Nomad & his beautiful car!
And a warning to the rest of us I guess... get your older car covered by an agreed-value classic-car insurer, huh!
