Aw, sh*t...

Came out today, and discovered I had left the map reading light on last night...

Glowing took the last remnants of juice left (just a sickly pale, orange glow on the indicator light, growing fainter and fainter). Time to take out the battery and take it into the house for a recharge....

It's at moments like this I wish I had a Honda Fitta (Known in Norway as Jazz, since Fitta is the Norwegian slang for a female body part...), with an itty bitty 28Ah battery, and not the 92Ah hunk of lead thats in my G...

RE: Aw, sh*t...

What were you doing reading maps in the middle of the night eh? Ah well... I once left my 12V refridgerator on after parking in the middle of nowhere on Hardangervidda for a weekend of hiking. The beer was cold but I had to wait 4 hours before someone accidentally got lost and drove by to jump start my G. And of course it had to be a Mitsu Pajero

RE: Aw, sh*t...

Left my caravan fridge on 12v when on the ferry crossing to Hooke van Holland, I paid extra to be first on first off, 480 very p*##ed lorry drivers waited 30 mins for me to get started by ADAC, have a split charger fitted to all my tow vehicles now.

I replaced the glow-plug bulb in the map light with a 12V LED.
I sometimes leave it on on purpose when I leave the car in remote areas to make it easier to find the way back in the dark. You can leave the LED on for days and still start the car.......

Tjærand,

now that we are on the subject of fitta - your Mitsibishi Pajero is named Montero in the US and other predominantly Spanish speaking countries: http://chameleon-translations.com/Index-Companies-pajero.shtml
And yes, at least in California English is by now a minority language. California being the leader in everything, the US is not far behind.

Re: Aw, sh*t...

I've been thinking about a dual battery system, in the event I wanted a winch. Perhaps I should install one anyways, in case I ever feel the need to read maps or need cold beer in the middle of Hardangervidda

One solution

To deal with the dead battery solution, I built circuit that killed power to most consumers if the ignition, doors, etc hadn't done anything recently. That has saved me several times. The kids leave the reading lights on all the time. I've really created some bad habits now!

I got burned by the lockers once since then. Parking with an engaged (actually selected) locker on my truck will draw current and kill the battery too.

A commercial alternative: http://www.prioritystart.com/ I have one of these too, but it is still sitting on the shelf.

RE: Aw, sh*t...

Johan-Kristian,

in the event you want a winch you want something different than double batteries.

A 9000 lb winch draws about 500 amps under full load - your battery has only 88 Ah. Two batteries will give you 176 Ah.
Since it is recommended anyway that you have your engine running while winching (who would want to end up not being able to start the car after a lengthy recovery) you want/need an alternator that pumps more amps quicker back into the system. Your alternator pumps only 60 A. I have upgraded all my trucks to 200 A. Pullpal.com used to sell them.

And for those low voltage days I carry a spare (small but powerful) battery with me. http://www.odysseybatteries.com/

Re: Aw, sh*t...

I'm with Harald, use a hotrod alternator. Another source is www.wranglernw.com I run one of those alternators in my G and it is excellent. Fair prices and they supply very right wiring as well. When I am on a trip I also carry a fully charged sealed battery.

Smart chaps these Japanese. They decide to rename the Pajero in Spain and other predominantly Spanish-speaking countries, as you rightly point out, and forget that the Canary Islands are part of Spain, where the Pajero has always been named the PAJERO.

RE: One solution

I have the priority start on both my dual battery G (on the starting battery), and on my wife's van.  One side benefit of the priority start was that it warned us of the battery going south in the wife's van by repeatedly finding it disconnected each time the van would sit a couple days without driving.  The battery ALWAYS started the car after the convenient brake pedal tap to re-connect, but the annoyance was enough to drive us to replace the battery.  No trouble since.

Re: Aw, sh*t...

I would contact them through the website about your application. I can tell you exactly the model if you were running a 300 diesel 617 but the motor you have might mount differently or may have clearance issues. Contact them. Very nice people. Shipping might be very expensive for you. Hopefully there will be someone in Europe that has information about a high performance alternator produced close to you. Wrangler NW is 90 miles to the north of where I live. I stopped by and they handed it to me. Best of luck,
