722.6X Transmission Filter/Fluid Service

Greets,

I'll probably get whacked up side the head for not using the "Search" button, but I just wanted to share some info with all of you.

For years now, I've been trying to get my local dealer to change the Tranny fluid/filter on my cars, but since they all have the 722.6X trans (Sealed for "Life", whatever that is!!), they refuse to touch it, threaten me with Warranty Void, yah-die yah.

Well, I decided to call an aquaintance who is the Lead Tech at "The Main" MB Dealership in "One of the Largest Cities" in the US.

Well, I couldn't get a black and white proof of the change in Mantra in the form of a Service Bulletin, but I did get it in email form from him. To me, it as close to the "horse's mouth" as I've found, and I trust this guy. He is a South African with loads of G experience.

Anyway, here's his speil:

"As to trans fluid changes, The factory now calls for a one time oil and filter change at 40k for the 722.6 ( 39k for the 722.9) as of model year 2006 so they would appear to have changed their stance on trans service. We still use the 722.6 on AMG and V-12 vehicles and the service is basically drop the pan and filter for about a 4-5qt change. Earlier vehicles like your 140 and 210 will probably have a torque convertor drain for an additional 3-4 qts.If the vehicle has over 50K and exibits a torque convertor "shudder" then the proceedure is to flush with 10 qts (cooler hose diconnected) due to the fact there is no T/C drain. If the trans exibits no problems then a oil/filter change should be fine. There is a specific fluid that costs an arm and a leg although a high qaulity synthetic ATF seems to work well. We have been using this for the older cars (722.6) and have not seen any failures. Tell the degenerated belt material guy there are no belts or bands in that trans, only clutches. "

I notice it says "One Time" change.

What has everybody been doing with their trucks??

RE: 722.6X Transmission Filter/Fluid Service

If you check the clubgwagen.com website, there is a writeup on the fluid change in the tech section.

Use the newer MB fluid that is made for the 7G-Tronic. It's approved for the 5 speed, too; and is about half the cost. Do not use "any quality ATF", unless you want to risk your warranty coverage.

RE: 722.6X Transmission Filter/Fluid Service

following Dutch's writeup I have done the oil change as soon as I heard about the possibility. By the way, the manual has several pages on the subject - so, the transmission has always intended to be serviced.

Re: 722.6X Transmission Filter/Fluid Service

I'm glad this topic has just come up. My WIS print out on ATFs for the transmission lists 3 approved products:

1. MB 236.10 ATF A 001 989 23 03
2. MB 236.10 ATF A 001 989 21 03
3. Shell ATF 3403-M 115

The use of the Shell product, I assume, should not void any warranty. Is anybody familiar with it and it's general availability?

Mike.

"Sealed for life" is correct, it depends on what life you expect out of your transmission. In EU you can have this service done and even good MB workshops advise Taxi and Ambulance owners to have the ATF changed every 100k miles or so.

Re: 722.6X Transmission Filter/Fluid Service

im 99% sure my 02 owners manual says to change the trans fulid at 60K miles. My dealer said they "tested" it and it didnt need it.

So im looking to having it changed again..

On a side note, what about the fluid in the converter?

If you change just the fluid in the pan then your only getting half the fluid out arnt you?

Shawn,

read post #1 and you have an answer to your torque converter question.

Re: 722.6X Transmission Filter/Fluid Service

I asked MB dealer here in Japan if they would change fluids on 5sp ATs. They said they did it quite many times. I also asked if if I should be extremely careful on oil temp when checking fluid level. They said, if you drive it for a while, usually oil temp reaches 80C. But they recommended to change filter at the same time. So, I guess, treatment should be the same as other normal ATs except the ATF to use.
