Central diff on '96 290GD?

Wondering how the transfer case is set up...

Is there a diff, so that when in 4wd you don't wind up the drive train? Meaning that you can leave the selector on 4wd at all times without a problem...

Or is the 4wd meant to be used only off-road or on snow/mud/slippery places?

Am used to the RRs/LRs, which are permanent 4wd with a central difflock (manual or viscous, depending on the models) for poor driving conditions.

Thanks!

two things will tell you
1 - is the 290GD a 461 (im pretty sure it is) - then its part time, no center diff
2 - how does you shift lever for 4WD look like? If it looks like the one on the following page, its a part time system.

Harald,

Thanks! It's a 461, and yes, that's the lever.

Shuck... Around here, we could use a permanent 4wd! Should see the road going to my house, even though it's in one of the posh quarters of the capital...

If I can lay my hands on a later transfer case with permanent 4wd, is it a straight-fit replacement? Meaning, same length prop shafts, same mounts positions, same engine attach points?

Thank you!

463 VG150 will not work - front drive shaft rotates opposite direction

It should be.... no 290GDs made in W463 guise.

As far as I can remember, the only engines ever shared by two baumuster or more were the M102 (230 GE) which was offered as 460, 461 and 463 and the OM602 (250 GD) which was offered as460 and 463.

So what about this one: http://home.mobile.de/SID2hxhPTpAiTVmqRMfGWWdNw-t-vaNexlCpHpIsAsCsK...

Some kind of rebuilt or just an error in writing?

Well, I don't know because the fuel filler in the third picture is in the rear of the car (as in a 460/461), but no 461s were made with the Convertible with fixed windshield bodywork (code 1) so from that viewpoint that could be a 460 that has had a frontal cosmetic upgrade to 463 plus the fitting of the OM602D29 engine.

The year of manufature states is 11/96 when the 461 and not the 460 were in production. However, as I wrote before, no 461 were produced as civilian "cabrios".

However, there are a couple of doubtful issues. Those rims look to me as the A 463 401 02 02 (7J x 15 H2 ET 63 mm as fitted optionally to early 463s) rather than the A 460 401 00 02 (7J x 15 H2 63 mm as fitted optionally to the 460/461).To complicate matters, that interior in typical of an early 463. So it could well be an early 463 (230GE, 300GD or 300GE) retrofitted with the OM602D29 engine and with has had its rear renewed with the fuel tank of a 461 after an accident.

So what is this really?

Definitely, not a production G, but an early G refursbished in 1996.
