Recaro seat upgrade on my G

One of the things I didnt care too much for is the short seat bottom of the stock Recaro seat in my G as well as the padding of which is 20 years old has seen plenty of action over the years. Being 6 foot tall, a short seat base makes for somewhat limited support of the lower legs and long trips can be a little uncomfortable. I have been looking around on Ebay for the past year, losing bids most of the time, but yet still trying to score a bargain and last week I finally won a single seat from a BMW320IS. The new seat has the adjustable thigh extension...which is sweet. It was the passenger seat which is perfect...yielding the backrest control knob in its correct postion in the G which is on the drivers right. The end result is a seat which is really comfortable giving lots more support. Only drawback I see is the bottom side bolsters are a bit more defined than the G originals, but nothing a diet and a few pounds off my butt cant fix. This expenditure dipped into my seat reupholstering fund so that will come later to the original plaid.
Here are some pics of the old seat, and new.

RE: Recaro seat upgrade on my G

Nice. Were the rails a direct fit or did you need to modify them a bit?

RE: Recaro seat upgrade on my G

Mark, rails were a direct fit which made for a easy 30 minute install. It appears the older seats of the 80's were all pretty standard with the rail mounting points...I was banking on that when I bought it.

RE: Recaro seat upgrade on my G

Makes life easier doesn't it. I think the Recaros of that vintage had one specific seat rail set up and it varied little between Marks and models.

When I put in my new (to the G) seats the rails were lined up the same as well but the mechanism was a bit different. Minor modification and i was good to go.

Mike,

What year or vintage of BMW 320IS did you get that seat from, and about how much did it cost you? I have been looking for a similar type seat for another project.

RE: Recaro seat upgrade on my G

Phil, I want to say a mid 80's 320is, I dont know for sure. I paid 265.00 for the seat which was in very good condition being the passenger side and all. Normal sales on Ebay have been yielding 400-600 for the pair. The sizing is right. Other BMWs used a wider seat which I think may pose a problem with the distance between center console and door pillar. I have seen some wider seats installed on used Gs for sale and notice that the area by the hand brake is usually ripped. The new Recaros that should fit and by which I was going to buy at some point if I didnt find the "right" ones are the LXF or LXW. You can do a google search for Recaro LXF as many sales sites have the dimensions of the seats and those seemed to be the ticket.

The seats look great, but I don't think that I could drive a vehicle without armrests.

I always thought that for myself but the G seems to be situated with the steering so close that it isnt a big deal. With my recent incident of my back going out I am trying to keep a "better" posture while driving as the usual driving with the lean to the right armrest kinda throws my back out of whack. After driving the past few days the only issue I see is that for repeated in and out of the drivers seat can be a chore with the higher bottom bolsters for ease of sliding out and in. The leg/thigh extensions for me make all the difference in the world for my 60 mile commute in comfort.

RE: Recaro seat upgrade on my G

My CSE Recaro's. The side bolsters and head rests are huge, it's like they were designed for the space shuttle. The seat bolsters that house the switches are a pain in the butt Thankfully I'm not large in the seat or I would be sitting on them completely. I plan to have the seats recovered someday, (check out the hand brake induced wear), I will get the upholstery shop to modify a few things at the same time.

Bernie...those seats look like someone squashed the Michellin man. Looks like they give plenty of support. I see those sell for 2000.00 or so a piece new. Did they come with your G ?

They were in there when I bought it, however I'm not sure if it left the factory with them or somebody dressed it up after. Though I have seen one other G with the same interior, also a Japan import, it might have been done over there. An interior remodel is in the plans.
