What size is the nut?????

I need to remove the tailshaft flange from my Getrag 5sp. I have the version with a large 12 pt nut. It looks like somewhere around a 28-30mm but I don't have a deep one that large. Anybody know what it is? I need to run out and socket shop

RE: What size is the nut?????

Can't get my caliper on it, that's for sure. I have the service manuals and they give torque but not fastener size.

I might just load it in the truck and run down to the tranny guy. Maybe he will have a socket that fits.

RE: What size is the nut?????

Unless it is something strange, it should be a 30 mm, I bought a special socket just for MB tranny's from the Snap-On man last year, but a standard deep well 30 should get the job done, I had to grind a little off of the wall on my old socket to make it fit some of the MB auto tranny's, hence the reason I bought a job specific socket .

Cheers,
Ben

RE: What size is the nut?????

As an earlier post said, it is probably 30mm (or 1 1/4"). That's what many of the MB auto trannies in cars use. I tried all the parts stores (NAPA, Pep Boys, Checker, etc) recently to find a 12pt 30mm or 1 1/4" deep to no avail a couple months ago. They had 6pt sockets but not 12pt. I borrowed one from the local transmission shop. I later did find such sockets on web sites.

Here is one,

Re: What size is the nut?????

Brent, my solution was to get a single 3/4" drive 1 3/16" socket and weld it to a 1/2" drive 1 1/16 Craftsman socket. That created a tool that is around 3 1/2" long. I bought the 12 point 3/4 drive at a Napa store. Evercraft brand. The 3/4 drive allows that long tailshaft to go through there and a 6 point socket won't work. I tried to find a deep 12 point in either metric or SAE. No dice, so I gave up and made the tool. I wasn't up to stepping into the SnapOn van for that special purpose socket.

Do you have the service book for that tranny? There is a sequence that must be followed to get the tailpiece off. One part of the linkage internals must be freed and it is not intuitive. Let me know if you need the info.

RE: What size is the nut?????

Guys,

The Mercedes socket is very well made and is affordable.

We keep it in stock, so give us a jingle when/if the need arises.

Thank you,

RE: What size is the nut?????

I found a 1 1/4 deep 12 pt locally, and while maybe the 1 3/16 might have been a little better It looks like the one I bought (for $7) will do the trick.

Dai, I do have the sevice manuals and did read the side panel removal part, thanks though

I am getting closer and closer! Tomorrow I have fence to fix, Sat I have drag racing, Sunday maybe?
