RE: SO is this true from Mercedes Benz on downsizing rims?

From the other side of the pond--here'e my 280 GE with 33x10.5x15 BFG M/T (265x85x15) and 30mm H&R magnesium alloy spacers. The 150HP engine and auto gear box don't really let you feel any loss of torque.
Also becasue the tire is not monster wide, the handling is very good. The only problem is on wet surfaces, so I am going to get them siped. For winter I have proper winter tires (Dunlop Grand Treks 31x10.5x15).
I was considering 35x12.5, but Harald here recommended switching to 6.17 gearing, and I am still hesitating. I still prefer the winter tire option (not too wide or big) and with such gearing that would be too much torque--right? Or does somebody has a different experience?

Re: SO is this true from Mercedes Benz on downsizing rims?

My biggest regret with the 55 is that I can not fit the 16 inch atik wheel under it. Do not get me started with MB service. The crap that I have been told would make Karl Benz turn over in his grave. I do not even bother talking to my dealer any more.

Nugat, if your tires are serving your intended and present purpose and offroad needs why go bigger ? The extra money saved on doing a gearing swap and bigger tires will probably buy you a lot of cool things to add to your G or Pinz.

Personally I think your G looks "just right" with those 33's.

RE: SO is this true from Mercedes Benz on downsizing rims?

Piotr,

it depends on you gas foot how much torque will be created where the tire meets the ground.

A G55K has a lot more torque (with stock gears) than you will ever have with 6.17 gears. Is a G55K undreveable in the winter? Well again, it depends on the driver's foot.

So, get 35's and 6.17 gears.

For many years guys seeking advice have asked me about tires and gears. For the serious, my answer has always been 35/6.17 (or respective gears for other vehicles). Then the discussion about "why?" follows. In the end most ignore the gears and throw on slightly smaller tires like 33's. Dramatic power loss and speed increase for crawling remain unresolved. I could have spent that time with a few beers at the beach. On that note - that's where I am heading this moment.
Salud!

Oh well, Harald, I'm just trying to preserve/justify my investment in two sets of wheels two months ago...
Mike! It's not a pinz, its a volvo c303/tgb1111! Big difference. Here's my last sunday with it. Gelenda was there too and almost equal. It just cannot match the clearance (16 inch) and approach/departure/climb ability (100%) of Laplander

Re: SO is this true from Mercedes Benz on downsizing rims?

Hus,
BFG 33s are off the shelf in Poland (off the web actually). My G has a 2 inch body lift, not springs, I exchanged the old springs for new original Sachs. I think the look comes also from 30mm spacers. I have no idea about the mirrors. My 1987 G was top option back then (9 seater, auto, air con, webasto, recaro seats, alloys, heavy duty springs, fender flares etc) but the vin check says nothing abot the mirrors. Must have been the model's standard.

RE: SO is this true from Mercedes Benz on downsizing rims?

Both mirrors have markings: "Hella,  II e1 01*14062, III e1 02*17335, IIIE1 01 17335"--the last one in big letters. So inquire with Hella perhaps.

As for the pictures, obliging with pleasure.

Re: SO is this true from Mercedes Benz on downsizing rims?

Hay I value all your opinions, if not I wouldn't be here every day.

Anyway, blew some of my kids inheritance on new rims through Sean. (Anyone want to buy a set of 18 inch rims?)

I think with the driving style (98.3%) hehehe Highway and (1.7%) off road, I am going with Silentarmor. On tireracks site they are rated in the top 3, and noise level is very important to me since I make my living via the mobile phone.

I think Harald's calculation -graphically explained- was super clear. One question only: What is ET?

RE: SO is this true from Mercedes Benz on downsizing rims?

ET is German and stands for "Einpresstiefe"

ET is measured from the centerline of the wheel towards the outside until reaching the mounting face in Millimeters (mm) - "B" in figure 2.
Backspace on the other hand, is measured from the back lip of the wheel towards the outside until reaching the mounting face in inches - "A" in figure 1.
