Redline synthetic oils

I know some you from the USA use Redline synthetic in you T-case and diffs. Whats the name of that specific oil? I've found a Redline dealer locally here in Norway that imports whatever I tell him to, but he cant find any equivalents to GL4 and GL5.

I use MTL in my manual transmission. I use MT90 (GL4) in the transfer case and 75W90 (GL5) in the diffs. Hopefully, Dai will chime in. He's sort of the resident guru on the stuff. He uses D4-ATF in his manual tranny.

Here is a link to the Redline site with info on the products.

Transfer Case: Redline MT-90
Diffs: 75W-90 Gear Oil

Both are great stuff!

Re: Redline synthetic oils

Mercedes calls for Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) for the manual transmissions. Redline makes D4-ATF that is specifically formulated for that purpose. They design it so that there is the correct friction for the syncros to hook up but the oil mimimizes wear of those soft metal components. I have used this oil for years in various manual boxes. I put 50,000 miles running on that oil in the 5 speed Getrag in the G before removing it to replace the input bearing. Everything looked perfect in there. It is great stuff and has worked as advertized for me. It satisfies GL-4 requirements same a ATF that MB calls for.

MTL is a GL-4 70W80 gear oil that is a bit heavier viscosity than D4-ATF. I run this in a 5 speed Getrag in a Dodge Cummins. That transmission calls for the SAE 10W30 gear oil.

MT-90 is a 75W90 GL-4 gear oil and works great in the T-Case that calls for an 80W GL-4 oil.

Redline 75W90 is great for the diffs and will satisfy the requirements of GL-5+. I use this where 90 wt gear oil is called for in other applications like farm equipment gearboxes. It reduces temperatures for sure.

I have been relying on these oils for over 12 years and the great thing is the prices have actually dropped over time. I run the motor oil in the aircooled motorcycle motor and in small engines like lawnmowers and 4x4 ATV's. Excellent products in my opinion.

Cheers,

Guess I started with it too late to be able to say the price has decreased, Dai. I bought it a couple years ago for $7.00 a qt from myoilshop.com, but their price is now $8.50/qt. That's still cheaper than any other place I've found (here in the US).

I've got some D4-ATF I'm going to try in the transmission on the next change. I doubt I'll be able to tell any difference, but the tranny might.

Just as an aside (dont want to hijack the thread), I recenty bought an 81 240D with a manual transmission. It calls for 10-20W or 20W oil. I put ATF in it before I bothered to read the book. My older 200D called for ATF as have all the manual transmission MB I've seen.

Re: Redline synthetic oils

I just changed my four speed to Redline D4 ATF, from regular ATF. Seems like a happy choice. I am still running Amsoil in transfer case and axles, but am thinking of going with Redline for them on the next change. Amsoil is harder to find in this area. Should have become a dealer when it was free to do so.
