2002 G500 trade in value?

Thinking of trading in mine. Just under 62,000 miles. Black on black. Typical problems of this model year. Purchased extended warranty to fix the big stuff.
What, within a thousand dollars should I ask for from M-B dealer for my truck ?

Thanks,

Bo

RE: 2002 G500 trade in value?

Kerr,
I'm at $29,000 right now. Thought that was a bit low (truck is driven to work and back, less than 50 miles off-road use) but might have to readjust my thinking!

Thanks,

Bo

RE: 2002 G500 trade in value?

Dealers are trying to retail them in the mid-30's, so to make any money they have to buy them cheap. I priced several in that range from 32-35. You may be better off selling it yourself.

My daily driver is an E 320 Wagon with 136,600 miles on it. It's a '95 with the inline 6.

Kerr,
60% of my decision is reliability (for the wife when she uses it) and the balance is that in this calander year, i run out of depreciation for a business vehicle. Dealer wants me to consider a GL450, but the body style doesn't fit my eye...........any thoughts?

Keep it...
You've most likely already fixed all of the major trouble areas... The price that you get for it now vs. after 100,000 is not likely a huge difference.

Also consider selling it yourself. You are selling a vehicle with very little compitition. As was pointed out above... A person could buy this for less than a new Jeep Rubicon, and if I had to choose from a used Mercedes G-Wagon vs Jeep...

Re: 2002 G500 trade in value?

i agree.. i had a LOT of problem with mine. at 59,980 miles they replaced 10 pages of stuff all computers or related parts. Ive been trouble free for the most part.

the motor and trans have proven good. thats the same motor as in any S500 or SL500.. I ve seen those cars with 200k miles that are still in good shape.

If your doing it from a business stand point why not take that $29K and put it towards a new 07 G500.. start the process all over again. $84K-30K.. thats $60K should be able to deduct all that in a few years.. not sure how the G fall in the new tax stuff or lease it.

I bought my wife a GL450 in January. It is an excellent car. The ride is amazingly smooth, but it also handles really well in the bends. Unlike anything I've ever driven. The interior is very good too, and the kids like the headrest dvd player. I would definitely recommend it, especially if your wife will be driving it a lot. It doesn't feel too girly compared to some of the alternatives (my wife had a Lexus suv before, and I was rarely seen driving that).

It hasn't had anything go wrong in the first 5,000 miles, and I think the 2002 G500 had been in the shop several times by then. Also, it seems better screwed together than the G - no rattles or funny noises.

Mind you, I can't see taking it to Baja. It just doesn't look like it really wants to go off road, although it is undoubtedly capable of that. I particularly like the downhill descent function, which I think beats the Gwagen on sandy/gravelly dropoffs. Although coming back up that dropoff would be better in the G.

It's a tough choice between the two if you don't do a lot of off road.

By the way, I think that trade-in price is not too bad, assuming they also give you a discount on the new car.

I used to be of that mind myself. I think serious wieght has to be placed on the troublesome nature of the early MBUSA G's though. I am a six hour drive, one way, from the nearest MB dealer. I am thirty minutes from the Jeep dealer. The complex nature of the electronic systems in those G's scares me, under the guise of long term ownership, especially the way I like to use my G. The Rubicon is so much closer to my ideal these days. It has the necessary mechanical bits minus all the fru-fru. I actually find the somewhat crude Rubicon to be rather refreshing. I would bet that it requires less, and less expensive maint than the '02 G, and will go just as many places. There is a reason I own an old G and an old MOG. I find them to have come from a much different mindset than todays MB products.

RE: 2002 G500 trade in value?

Drove the GL450 for a while, seemed sturdy, safe and better suited for a metro area like DFW, Tx. Dealer emailed that he finally had an '07 G500 in my color (black). Really don't think i could switch to the GL at this time, it seems like a nicer Escalade!!!!!!!!

As of now, I'll sit on my '02 since I drive it 98% of the time, unless a great offer comes along.

Thanks,

bo

Id love to put the wife the GL and she likes them, But im going to hold out and see if we can get a off road package in a diesel...

Looks at your G from this stand point.. If they give $29K and you bought it new you have only lost $51K... so no matter what you do to it now you cant loose to much more money...

Talked to M-B dealer today. He's a friend, we bird hunt together. They just received a '07, and said he talked to M-B and there is to be no '08s.
I'm confused.......anyone else heard this???

Just for a data point, I recently bought my 02 G500 on Ebay, from a guy who lived about 2 hours away. 39k miles, excellent condition, $32k. Only problem I have found is one bad door lock actuator.

There was a used G55 on a high-priced lot here locally for $52k, sold for $49k. About 25k miles.

The dealers rarely know much in advance what is going to happen. The G has been slated for civillian production untiul 2010 I believe. How long MBUSA will sell them does remain to be seen but I think there will be '08s. They probably would have told you the same thing a year ago about the '07s. The G is just too darn purposeful for the dealer network, they simply don't understand them, I think most would prefer not to have to deal with the G class.
