petermerle - 4/11/2007 11:25 PM For the W460's you can get the LOBRO 302186 or SPIDAN 22690 from GKN. Not sure if it fits 461's Peter
You can find the GKN catalogue here: http://www.gknservice.com/gkn-ids/jsp/product/catalogue.jsp
GKN ones dont seem to be as strong as the Merc ones for some reason so Im told.

The Mercedes uses GKN. GKN = Mercedes

thats what I thought, but buying just the CV from GKN never seems to last as long as buying the complete shaft and cv from mercs

463 5.6L its mostly the short shaft CV that goes. As the longer shaft has more flex, However he uses Simex extreme 35", before these were available he used BFG'S. A combination of large tyres with imense grip, and a lot of torque from the 560 is a remedy for trouble. I wonder how a std G500 and G400 would fair in such conditions. The LR's we compete with snap shafts and cvs at the first glint of severe conditons, but they take 20 minutes to change, not on a G and nowhere near as cheap.

But you can find many Land Rover axle and cv joints makers, such as ashcroft, maxidrive, etc, etc, Another problem is that the G joint also keeps the wheel in its place, the other 4x4 cars when they brake a joint there is no problem, they can keep going with a locker on and a disconected hub. I will try to find a 463 axle and change the joints and the other parts of the wheel needed. Maybe they are a bit stronger.

forget it, the 463 is the same axle, apart from being wider and turn (front) the opposite way, so its no stronger, the 560 im on about is a 463 any how, ever since using simex extreme tyres its got worse, no give like the BFG. try nissan or toyota axles, there stronger.

The g axles were over engineered for the engine output of there time, but Horse power and torque have increased in the later part of there production but axles have'nt been made to cope in serious conditions, it boils down to how you drive, to prevent breakages

RE: CV joints and U-joints for '97 290G - What and where?

I think you are wrong, the newer 463 models have different cv joints, they are a bit larger in the output shaft, they even have different number of splines, bearings are also bigger. Other 4x4 axles are stronger but only some of them, only toyota hdj or patrol GR have stronger axles, the others are even weaker than ours. I will wait for the good news from you about those stronger joints Bf´s can kill axles faster than the simex, try to use them rockcrawling

when i say the same, I mean in general terms of strength, regardless of splines and bearings there still no stonger for 463'sup to 97. I cant vouch for the new 2000 onwards models. In the 5 years using the 463 there has been at least 10 cvs and 4 shafts broken, in the old 460 only 2 shafts, and maybe 2 cv's. both with 560 engines in the 460 and 463. I ran a 280 460 and never had any issue with shafts or cv's. and kept up with all the modded vehicles in the same events, my best being a 4th, and I ahd only really started in challenge events so my co driver and I were still lerning. I still have that 280 and ill tray back it one day and am confident I could still be up there with the rest of them with a good fit co driver, with litle modifications to a std swb 280. I am surprised you are breaking them with the nissan engine though as we are not talking about 300HP !!

I allready saw them in a demonstration car here in Portugal, but they didnt arrive to the public. Maybe one day with stronger joints I will buy them for my G in the 37 size. Do you know that you can make your one tire patern by cutting it.
