body lift advice.

i am thinking of a body lift for my 280GEL because the lpg tanks are too low.

has anyone here fitted this kit that orc sells? i hope to fit this kit but would be greatful for some good advice from p3 (as always )

Hello klause.i have often looked at your site on all aspects and found it great for answering questions in my mind.

i thought the lift kit from orc for the 460 was alot easier.i need to get those tanks as high as possible!

i looked at the orc kit and it looks very simple,could i not find bolts and spacers for less money here in the uk?

i am sure someone must have done this lift on a 460 with the orc kit or a bespoke kit.

Huss. what is it you want to achieve, if you want to get clearance of your tanks to go off road then you need to lift the body about 12" even then you will catch them on something, there are lots of firms in the UK that can supply you with a lift kit, it is after all only a longer bolt and a spacer, the little alterations to all the things that interface between the body and chassis is the important thing to get right, dont forget also that when you increase the body height you move the CoG.
In my opinion, move your tanks if you feel they are vunerable or have some protection put under them (skid plate)

a body lift seems simple (8 disc spacers and 8 longer bolts)

on closer inspection:
bumpers and body are now separated by the same amount you lifted the body
fabricated bumper adapters are needed
the upper radiator mounts don't fit any longer
fabrication of custom brackets are needed
if you use the lower radiator mount spacers, shrout and fan are off be the amount of lift
a custom shrout is needed, engine cooling might be compromised
the transmission shifters need to be custom elongated, shifting problems are to be expected
the transfer case shifter will need to ne elongated and the body cut out needs to be enlarged (shifting problems are common on body lifts)
inside the fenders a gap the size of the lift will be visible (you can look through this gap of frame and inside fender panels (UGLY!!) some install rubber sheets to cover the gaps (even uglier)
gas tank vent lines will need to be re located
the big filler tube from body cut out to gas taank will be too short. You'll have a hard time to find a rubber hose suited for gasoline in that size (it exists somewhere - but where).

Maximum recommended lift is 5 cm (2") - most likely not enough for your monster tanks.

I would find a different location for those tanks or give up off-road aspirations with that particular vehicle.

As usual - as soon as you change the basic layout the engineers have created, you end up with tons of headaches and many sleepleess nights.

the case has been ajourned i aint gonna mess up a perfectly designed vehicle....no way......!

i am amazed at just how much detail is involved for a couple of inches. you are the man harald

now bill,you are the fabrication man the reason i have looked at this topic is because i intend on sending my G to cyprus and it will be used off road and those tanks are gonna be in the way.

do you know of any companies in the uk that could fabricate tanks to fit flush in the arches? this is your territory i guess

Tha only tanks you can get for lpg are always rounded, that is the optimum shape for a pressure vessel, like all things you have to compromise, Who ever set that G up did a perfect job in produicing a super 9 seater G with great economy for long range traveling, my advice is look for some thing else for off roading.
I didnt think you could import a vehicle that age to Cyprus.

of course there are some aspects, but

you'll need the ORC bumper and radiator kit. That comes with the shifter knop elongation and the radiator brackets.

inside the fenders a gap is visible, but mostly the tire is blocking that view anyway. On the other hand, there is noc chance of mud getting stuck.

In addition, there needs to be checked if the steering (mantelrohr) tube will get in touch with other things inside of the engine bay. Mine was about to hit the intake manifold.

The hoses for the tanks are ok with 4cm lift.

 

If you do the lift, get the screws and distance parts from a separate supplier and get the Body-Kit from ORC.

PS The front Bumper doesn't look too bad without the lift adapaters..

Hus, you off road that LWB 280 then you need your head tested, its to nice for that. move the tanks in the back, lay a false floor over them and get a dog guard so you can stack up to roof height. or buy an old 280 swb for banging around in, Or an old LC11. your being silly now.

ok ok ok i take back all my silly ideas!!

i do have a swb cabrio in n-cyprus to go offroading in.

i think i am outnumbered on this one and the wife wins the battle!!

she wanted a mini cooper cabrio before i sold our mercedes vito van and got the 280gel.

.......now she says "i'm keeping this G, I really like it now especially in narow side streets!!!!!


good job i have my cabrio G in n-cyprus!

My 460 G from 1987 has a 5cm (2 inch) lift, and it does not look like it was so complicated as described here (it was done by the previous owner but he knows few details). It has the spacers allright. Is it posssible that 460 LWB with auto transmission is an easier procedure?
It also had the gas tanks-two of them along the frame under the body on each side between the frame and sides.
They did not go lower than the frame, but I still hated the thought of them hitting something hard offroading. So I had the lpg installation dismantled.

I have no picture of the tanks, but if you look at my profile, the G photo there is still with the tanks (previous owner photo), but you can't see them. They were relatively narrow and long ovals on both sides undercarriage between the frame and the sides of the car. The fill-in was in place of the left white reversing light on the back. I left the tanks with the mechanic as you cannot reuse them here for LPG (not allowed reuse).

You could fit smaller capacity tanks, The ones you have, if I remember are one each side like torpedos, how about 4 smaller ones each side which would tuck up better between the frame and the body then a slight 2" body lift along with a bash plate would make sense.
