Right Hand Drive Production

Greetings.

I've been looking at getting a G320 for myself, but everywhere I look they are left hand drive. Was there a gap in production when the RHD stopped around 1995? I know that there is RHD G500s from the early 2000s and I see production has started on RHD again now.
Can anyone tell me if there are RHD Gs around the mid-late 90s.

Cheers
Sean

Nope - they stopped making RHD Gs in the mid 90s and as far as LHD production for 463s went they only made the 300GD (later rebadged G300 D) and a 300 GE (G 300 E). As you point out they did make some G500s in 1999/2000 as well as the G55K in 2005. There were also a few 461s made for NGOs etc but those are quite rare.

Never made a G320, G350 TD, G300 TD, G270 CDI, G400 CDI, G55, G320 CDI in RHD.

That's a Kompressor by the looks of things - also considering the year. There are some RHD G55 non-Kompressors in existence but from my understanding they are special orders rather than factor offers. There was one for sale in the UK from a GWOA Member - not sure if it ever sold or not.

I know just one non-Kompressor G55 AMG in RHD. It is a pre 01 Model Year and it left the factory as a G500, being sent to Affalterbach for the full AMG treatment. By looking at its datacard, it is a standard G500 LWB (code 463241) with the standard engine (code 113962) but it is indeed a very rare G55.

Here in Indonesia the G300/w463 continued to sell until 1998, but I've heard that they may have been new cars but old stock. My bro-in-law has a '97, I'll take a look at the VIN number to verify the actual production year. I've seen in the classified of a G320 for sale, but did not verify it, presumably it was a late model RHD. I've also seen a few G300 which had been converted into G320 (engine swap) by cannibalizing the engine from either an e320 or a ssangyong SUV.

Street price for a 97 and 98 is around us$25K-us$35K. I've seen a RHD brabus V12 not too long ago, belong to one of the army general (his daily driver) with military license plate (how convenient).

G300s were sold up until 1998 in Indonesia as they were assembled there. But the parts were all imported in 1994 - hence why they are G300s.

Not sure if it still the case but at one point the Presidential protection motorcade was all Gs and Suharto had an armoured w461.

Also Exxon tried to import some G500s - not sure if they succeeded or not. Supposedly there was also a G320 Cabrio in Jakarta at one point.

i know one G300 which has been fully converted to brabus 5.6L, including transmission, ECU, brakes, wheels. the whole works, with the exterior upgraded to look like the jubilee edition G500. it also happens to be up for sale (in indonesia). i'm still looking for a standard G300 in good shape to be used as my daily driver, finding one in excellent condition has proved to be quite difficult.

Max,

I take it you've been to Jakarta before? Yes I think that is the case, selling Gs here was not exactly like selling a Corolla, MB indonesia probably made those G300s by order. I've seen a used G500 for sale in a used car showroom, if not mistaken, I think it was an 01, not sure if it was an ex-Exxon or not. In any case, anything but 280GEs and G300s went it thru the grey market, military, or independent importer.

The presidential motorcade uses W461 290GD (lwb) used by the 'secret service', in any given trip at least presents 2 swb G300 cabrios (MPs), 2-3 290GDs, 1-2 Land cruiser 100s. So it's much like a G parade everytime they pass by :-D The VP house is close to my mother's house, I took pictures of the white cabrios before and posted them here, just haven't got a chance to take pics of the 290s.

My bro-in-law during Suharto era trained the 'secret service' of high speed driving with the Gs, he's driven the G personally used by Suharto which was the armoured version, and said that the windshield glass was so thick that you get dizzy looking thru it.

Jakarta is where I first met my love way back in the mid 80s. She was tall and black with a wonderful voice and such beautiful lines.... and a LWB. The ride was a bit rough compared to her siblings but hey love is blind.

Are these the G300s you are referring to? (Sorry for the cannibalisation of pictures but these are so rare...) So Max, according to you, these were assembled in Indonesia with 1994 parts, presumably in CKD. Any idea about units and versions made? Were these manufactured only for governmental customers or could any of these end up in "civilian" hands?

If you look at the pictures, the wheel rims and the fact that bumpers, mirror casings and fenders are painted in black rather than colour coded point definitely to pre-1994 specifications but that spare wheel cover is obviously post 1995.

As far as I know these are the only 463 not made either in Graz or in Affalterbach....

Yes correct, these are them, and the 8-year-old kid is mine :-D Well he'll be 9 in August. Anyway, these special ordered Gs including the 461-290GDs were not assembled here, they were imported as CBUs, not sure where. Only the 280GEs swb and lwb, starting from 1984-1992, then G300 lwb from 1993-1998. were assembled locally. Any other variance must've been either military special orders direct to MB, imported by independent dealers (only recently), or smuggled :-D

The only way that these military vehicles could get to civilian hands is through an auction when these vehicles are decommissioned. Of course, the priorities go to high ranking government officials first, then the subordinates down to the whole chain of command (well almost). So, 'real' civilians might as well stop dreaming, unless he/she has inside connections, or, buy it from whomever won the auction for a ridiculously high price. They're not stupid, you know :-) I know one older W461-290GD was sold for something like us$50K.

Haha no apologies necessary, feel free to distribute the pics wherever there's a G-related topic.

CBU = Completely Built Up => Imported as a whole vehicle.
CKD = Completely knocked down => to be assembled locally.

Gee, for a minute there I thought you were talking about the G

So, I suppose you've pretty much got one of the early production then, with all the Plad trimming. According to reliable sources, the first 2 years of production (84-85) only SWBs were produced, then the LWB started to appear sometime in 1985, from then on, no more SWB were assembled, and they're in high demand lately with higher market price than the LWBs just because they're so rare. BUT, I guess it might not have been the case as my LWB is an 84, or it could've been an early production test.

I use 'gwagener' on the 'other forum.
