I would suspect a relay problem in the glow system. I don't have the modern system like yours but the principal is similar I think. If the main glow relay is allowing your glow system to continue to run it will reduce the lifespan of the glowplugs. It could also be a relay that is sticking on on the light circuit itself. Either way it would be a good idea to hunt down the culprit. If you connect a test light to the glow circuit you should be able to determine if the glow system shuts off correctly or if it stays on as long as the light does. On the 617 motors the system continues to glow for a while after the light in the dash goes off. If it is quiet you can here the main relay click off. Best of luck solving the problem. A little tiny relay will be a lot less expensive than a malfunctioning main system relay box. I hope it's an easy fix for you. -Dai

Happened to me twice on my 96 463 Diesel. On the OM606 in inlet manifold needs to be removed to get at the plugs. JW

On the earlier motor if a plug or two fails one of the indications is that the dash light doesen't come on at all and there is normal cycle time of the glow power period. Sounds like a time consuming job to change out the plugs behind the intake manifold. When I have a problem with a glow plug I replace the set. With the need to remove and replace the manifold, doing all of them is the way to go. A fraction of the cost of the relay box. -Dai -Dai

Investigation confirmed failure of glow plug on cylinder no 5. It was a mission to extract but eventually came out less a couple of threads. Installed a new one and problem was solved. I had all the others removed and replaced with copper slip on the threads. regards Freek

In this, the service manual is very specific. I agree that when one glow plug is faulty it's better to replace the whole set. Not only because that might mean that the rest are about to go but also because replacing them is a pain in the neck so it's better to do them all. Cheers
