Re: 290gd glow plug light help

First of all, lucky you to have one of those trucks. I would suspect a relay problem in the glow system. I don't have the modern system like yours but the principal is similar I think. If the main glow relay is allowing your glow system to continue to run it will reduce the lifespan of the glowplugs. It could also be a relay that is sticking on on the light circuit itself. Either way it would be a good idea to hunt down the culprit. If you connect a test light to the glow circuit you should be able to determine if the glow system shuts off correctly or if it stays on as long as the light does. On the 617 motors the system continues to glow for a while after the light in the dash goes off. If it is quiet you can here the main relay click off.

Best of luck solving the problem. A little tiny relay will be a lot less expensive than a malfunctioning main system relay box. I hope it's an easy fix for you.

RE: 290gd glow plug light help

Most likely indication that one or more glow plugs are broken. Happened to me twice on my 96 463 Diesel. On the OM606 in inlet manifold needs to be removed to get at the plugs.

Re: 290gd glow plug light help

JW, when this occurrs on that motor (loosing function of a glow plug or two) does the system continue to power the glow circuit until the light goes off?
On the earlier motor if a plug or two fails one of the indications is that the dash light doesen't come on at all and there is normal cycle time of the glow power period.
Sounds like a time consuming job to change out the plugs behind the intake manifold. When I have a problem with a glow plug I replace the set. With the need to remove and replace the manifold, doing all of them is the way to go. A fraction of the cost of the relay box.

RE: 290gd glow plug light help

Gents

I had a glow plug light shining continiously for about one minute after start-up on my 290 GTD (602 983). Investigation confirmed failure of glow plug on cylinder no 5. It was a mission to extract but eventually came out less a couple of threads. Installed a new one and problem was solved. I had all the others removed and replaced with copper slip on the threads.

regards

Dai, in the OM602 and OM603 engines when the light continues to be on after start up it means not that the system continues to power the glow circuit (it may or may not depending on the engine's temperature) but just that there is one or more faulty plugs. In this, the service manual is very specific.

I agree that when one glow plug is faulty it's better to replace the whole set. Not only because that might mean that the rest are about to go but also because replacing them is a pain in the neck so it's better to do them all.

Cheers

One or more of your glow plugs is duff, thats how your G lets you know Tip: change them all, remove the injector pipes to do the job, it will save you hours of fiddling and removing/refitting them is quite easy.

Re: 290gd glow plug light help

The other issue could be the glow plug unit itself.
Mine just started doing the same thing and the glow plugs are brand new and were all tested.
Ordering a new unit now
