What is the experience of the other members on the reilability of the om 602 983 (290 turbodiesel) engine. It seems mine packed up (could be bearing failure but have not opened engine yet) on 168 000 km's. Whilst drivng at around 110km/hr the oil light suddenly came on, engine went into limp mode but i could not stop for about 500 to 600m due to road conditions. After pulling over to check oil and check for oil leaks (which were fine - and engine temp were about 90 ) the engine started to idle erratically and then died - could not start again - starter turns it over, but very slowly. I have been driving the vehicle for two years and bought it with 114 000km's on the odo. I have nursed it and hardly ever run it on full throttle for long periods. Oils and filters were changed religiously every 10 000km. Here in SA (zululand - subtropical) there appears to be a general problem with the vehicles running slightly hot. Any other members with similar experience? Would appreciate any comments Regards Freek

That engine is similar to the one fitted to the Sprinter van and I tell you, those guys driving their Sprinters are not reknowned for nursing their vans! And they seem to go on and on and on....

I drove Freek's truck a few days before this happened and it was running very well. It had just been at DC agents for three weeks having the pump and injectors done up. Most 290 owners you talk to here seem to gravitate towards talking about the temperature guage...
