RE: Speedometer failed gd 300 1986

For around $100 here in the states I had mine rebuilt. I sent it off to California and got it back in a week. Your plastic cogs have probably worn out. Check locally I am sure that there is someone that does this.

This will give you an idea of what is involved. The design is similar but they now have plastic cogs/gears: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Mult_gauge_repair/mult_gau...

Chris,

The people at http://www.info-instruments.nl/ in Hazeldonk were very helpful when I had the same exact problem. Give them a call and tell them you were refered by a G-wagen owner from Weelde. I'm sure they will remember.

RE: Speedometer failed gd 300 1986

I managed to pick-up a spare speedo today for near to nothing.

Hoping for a quick repair, I built the spare speedo into the truck.
No joy, it was in even worse condition then my own speedo.
The speed needle jumping up and down like it had a bad case of hick-ups.

Anyway, I'll give the guys a call and have one rebuilt.

RE: Speedometer failed gd 300 1986

Additionally (and this is a long shot) is there a buzzing like noise at the speedo that gets progressively louder as you accelerate? (I know with the diesel it is hard to hear but you could get going downhill and put in the clutch to quite things down a bit to see if you can hear the noise). There is a cable that runs from the speedo to the speedo head on the TC. Check it to make sure it is in good shape and not coming apart or frayed. For the old european cars this cable turned via a gear in the TC which in turn turned the gears in the speedo to make it work. A dancing needle usually points (no pun intended) to a faulty cable. You basically pull the cable out through cables sheath in the dash or you can pull it out the from the TC. You guys chime in if I am incorrect on this but it should be the same setup as the sedans of that vintage. If it is in good shape lube the cable up with some graphite spray (comes in a can). and feed it back in. once all the way in turn it a bit till you feel it catch (goes into a slot on the TC speedo head)

What a timely thread! I was about to ask the same questions.
I have the shrill whirring noise( only when it's cold out) a jumpy needle and a non functioning odometer. I was going to ask for reccomendations for a good VDO rebuild shop. Are there shops that specialize or is any instrument shop capable?

I had mine done at United Speedometer Service, they are in California too. Friendly, good price and fast turn around; I would reccomend them. Also here's a tip about MB speedos...never press the trip meter reset while rolling, it may jamb or break those small plastic gears inside.

There has got to be local VDO speedometer repair shop in Belgium or somewhere close to you in Europe that can take care of this for you.

RE: Speedometer failed gd 300 1986

Found a VDO repair service nearby.
www.vandenabeele.be for all you Dutch speeking guys ;-)

Anyway took my speedo's over ( the faulty and the very faulty one).

Into the repair shop I went and I saw VDO measurement apparatus from WWII or something as old as that at least.

"No problem, I've got the parts in stock ! You'll have it by mid next week.!"

Me again.

RE: Speedometer failed gd 300 1986

Any speedometer shop can do it.  Check your yellow pages.  The guy I use here in Denver also builds speedometer cables, so when I need service, I always bring them in together and put a new cable on the re-furbed speedometer.  Kind of like always changing the fuel filter when you change the pump.  The new speedo will hold up better longer if it's not being thrashed around by a crappy cable. (fuel pump lasts longer if not pushing against a clogged filter)

Re: Speedometer failed gd 300 1986

I've never had a G speedometer/odometer apart, but the odometers on the MBs from the 80 were very prone to failure (like the original post). There is a simple fix for those (and maybe the Gs). The plastic number wheels run on a pot metal shaft. After many rotations, the gears that turn the shaft slip on the shaft. You can carefully remove the "lock ring" from the end of the shaft and slip the shaft partially out of the number rings (keeping the number rings aligned) and roughen up the shaft so the gear will have something to grip again. I use a set of dykes and make some marks in the shaft. Push the shaft back into the number rings and you are set. Once I've done this, I've never had the odometer slip again.
