Check out our equivalent The quickest way to get from Witsand to Cape Infanta way down at the Southern tip of Africa is to cross the Breede River at a place called Malagas via the only motorcar pont left in Southern Africa and its man powered - they simply grab the cable strung throught the pont and walk / pull. It is leisurely and costs about $2. The men sing as they pull (and it isn't "Dont Pay the Ferryman" by De Burgh)

Try this Nice one Boy G, give me a ring and I will guide you through the "gruesome" task to attach picks! About Kei Mouth, great place and did the ferry too, my Wife and I went there in 2000 on our honeymoon. BTW is that your 300 GDT or the 290 GDT? amzimmy Edited by amzimmy 4/19/2007 4:29 AM

I think the "last one in Southern Africa" must refer to cable drawn pont as opposed to ferry?? Does anyone know if the pont across the Rio Maputo inSouthern Mozambicque near Bela Vista still exists?

The place in "The Outlaw Josie Wales" where the ferryman is trying to "play both sides" in the american "war between the states" and he starts out on one side of the river singing "the battle hymn of the republic" - a northern marching song, and half way across changes to singing "Dixie" - the prefered southern anthem. The point is brought home when he states that "Around these parts you have to be able to sing The Battle Hymn of the Republic, or Dixie, with equal enthusiasm." :^) -Dave G.

Off to the east is Miele Bangalala. I grew up on a farm just over the border in Swaziland and we went to Bangalala for holiday. Here you could see elephant on the beach from the Tembe. Where did you find that map though - obviously not Genesis it looks Russian!! (In fact I thought you were talking about the Malagas pont) Cheers

I would also be interested to see how many brethren have photos like your one above - ie really remote places. Where are they (and no Wales does surely not count!)

I would also be interested to see how many brethren have photos like your one above - ie really remote places. Where are they (and no Wales does surely not count!) Well, I think I lost count of all the "bribing" and "special-police-toll-fee" that I have paid. One trip still sticks in my mind, it was in Mozambique, traveling from Mutari-Baira-Maputo. I think we went through over 75 police and military roadblocks. We had to give our sunglasses, t-shirts, caps, cigarettes, food and of course Money not Meticais but Rands or $ (1 rand = 5000 Meticais at that time = 0.7 US$). At a one particular roadblock, they stopped us (with AK47) and a big fat guy said we did travel to fast through a built-up area. I asked what built-up area? There where no houses far or near. he pointed to a little shack between the bushes. I defended the matter by saying that this was ridiculous and above that how can he proof that I was going too fast? In an angry voice, he told me that he could tell from the dust cloud behind the vehicle that I was doing far more than 30km/hr (19 miles/hr). I really got my "nickers in a not" and refused to accept such an insult! Unfortunately for us, he had the advantage on the AK47 and threatened us with an arrest, after paying him R 300.00 and he liked my jeans belt as well (even if it was way too small for him!), so I lost that one too. After all that he let us go! amzimmy

Posts: 850 | Re: G at Golden Gate I HAVE to mention for all of you guys that are intending coming to South Africa, that what I have encountered in Mozambique is related to that area (Country) only . In South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Swaziland and Lesotho this things do NOT happen and the traveling is SAFE all round. There where many times that I traveled in Mozambique and nothing like that has happened. However, one has to be on the look-out all the time when traveling in Mozambique! amzimmy

That was fun, felt like I really travelled just now. And btw, right next door in Mexico the local constabulary has cleaned my pockets out more than once. I guess I should be glad they stopped at that!
