4x4abc Date registered: Apr 2006 Location: La Paz, Baja California, Mexico Vehicle(s): 02 G500 | RE: g500 roof racks get an aluminum roof rack - the more you save in weight on the roof rack, the more weight you can put on the rack Only leight weight stuff (sleeping bags etc.) should be on the rack anyway. Changing the center of gravity with a lot of weight on top will make you prone to roll overs. See http://www.pointedthree.com/disc/forums/showthread.php?tid=6931&pos... If you plan on using this rack for any travel beyond pavement, the rack should have as many legs as possible, better even a rack that has solid aluminum channels along the entire gutter. The combination of bad roads and legs will make the legs break sooner than you wish. Everyone who has been on an expedition will tell you long stories about roof racks flying off after a few days on washboard. Someone had pictures posted of a legless rack on a long wheel base G some time ago. But again, legs or not - keep the weight to an absolute minimum. MBUSA advises against roof racks all together. In the last thread "4x4abc" gave the following website, http://www.pbase.com/flydutch/image/49781921, which had a photo of some G's being transported with white roof racks. Would anyone be able to direct me to the website of those racks?

They are probably the next best to Voegele.

You can adapt the landrover one to fit (one of the users on the other forum did that, Fernweh). Or you can just step on the rear bumper, then the top of the spare wheel, then the roof. Even my five-year old could do it. (DSC02091.jpg) Attachments ---------------- DSC02091.jpg (121KB - 5 downloads)

You can adapt the landrover one to fit (one of the users on the other forum did that, Fernweh). There is a ladder for the G in my MB Accessories catalogue - B6 684 8305 £230.04 It hooks onto the rain gutter and uses the rubber stripping along the body to keep it away from the paint.
