Slightly off topic...Tools...Gearwrench..any in your box

I'm always looking around when I'm in a professional garage. Over the past few years I'm seeing more and more "Gearwrench" tools in their tool boxes and more importantly, out of their toolbox at the current job they are on.

Does anyone have in experience with these? Amazon seems to have the best price but if someone knows of less expensive, please share.

RE: Slightly off topic...Tools...Gearwrench..any in your box

I own a 9/16 wrench (open one end gear ratchet of the other)...it's been of the job with me about 6 years and hasn't broke yet. I sure I could though if I tried, it dosn't have much strength around the box ratchet area. However due to the thin designed handle, it starts to hurt your hand before you come close to applying enough torque to snap it. I use it mainly in tight/close areas were my socket/ratchet wouldn't fit.

"thin designed handle, it starts to hurt your hand "

I have a mix of Snap-on ans Craftsman in my boxes. I've never had an issue with the Snap-on thinness but the craftsman raised area in the middle has gotten uncomfortable a few times.

Do you see any design changes from 6 years ago that might have corrected the thinness?

I have a full set of Metric ratchet rings manifactured by an Australian company, Kincrome.

I have never had a problem with them and have found them invaluable for use in tight areas, they make usually time consuming tedious jobs rather enjoyable.

Before using the ratchet I always crack the thread first with a spanner just to reduce the load on the mechanism.

I'm pretty sure that Craftsman( Sears) makes a set just like that. Their return policy has always been great, if it breaks and it says Craftsman they will take it back no matter how old it is.

I have a set of Metric Flex GearWrenches that I use a lot. They are very useful in limited access areas like glowplugs on 617 in the GD. The 14mm Flex is the cool tool for that job, boy howdy. They have a flat enough surface on the edge so your hands aren't roached when using a lot of force. There is a fine texture in the side that you apply force to, the ratcheting side is smooth, a nice feature. I like the professional polished combination wrenches made by Craftsman for that reason. The edges are finished like SnapOn combination wrenches. I find the standard Craftsman's hurt more to use and are shorter pattern so there isn't as much leverage.

Re: Slightly off topic...Tools...Gearwrench..any in your box

I have both the Gearwrench set and Craftsman set. I have broken one 19mm gearwrench, but that was my fault. I used it on a high torqued brake job...

I like the craftsman a little better. On the gearwrench, it only allows the nut (or bolt) to slide in one side. Allowing you to use only one side of the 15 degree offset. The craftsman wrenches a little more expensive. Although I have not broken any, I can walk into any any Sears, and swap them out.

Ditto that. They really come in handy and are the main set I use when working on the G. I also have a Gearwrench ratchet set. It's nice enough and nicely finished, but not my favorite for general use because it's a little clunky to make room for the "pass through" gimick - which I think is half the reason I don't use them much. Not a gimmick guy. But they do the job okay. The flex head gearwrenches are great though.-Dave G.
