Does anyone in the the LA/SF Valley area know if T&R Drivetrain at 18551 Topham, Reseda, CA 91335 (ph 818-705-3410) is still in business? The phone number is no longer working. Maybe a new area code I'm not aware of ...

Thanks for the info GDog. I called the body shop today and they said that T&R closed ... went out of business.
So now I'm back to square one. Can any of the members here recommend a shop between the Mexican border and north Los Angeles to install new ring and pinion gears in my '84 280GE?

Unless I'm not paying attention try to contact Fernweh. He is happy with the job his shop did on changing his diffs. Unless of course that shop is T&R. His shop might be in the bay area. Too far? There has just got to be a good specialist in the Costa Mesa area I would bet. I have a pile of Diff shims that came in handy on his project. Let me know if you are in need.

Thanks for the shims offer Dai. I may take you up on it.
I contacted Karl Fernweh first about the diff swap and he told me about T&R, but unfortunately they're shut. Most of the Merc specialists that I called in the San Diego area won't touch grey market G's because of parts availability and/or non-familiarity with them. The local MB dealer also hesitated and even said they could not guarantee their work since it isn't a MBUSA vehicle!
I suppose I could take a drive upto the bay area, but I would probably need to leave the vehicle up there for a week or more depending on potential problems/ parts needed, etc. LA and south of LA would be much easier logistically.
I'd do the work myself except that I don't think I have the apptitude/required specialized tools to set the correct backlash and shim properly.
Anyone else?

Martin,
changing R&P is pretty easy. You'll need a diff spreader though, plus some tricky dials to measure the right preload for the bearings. Also, since the front has to come a part you'll need a claw wrench for the bearings: http://www.4x4abc.com/G-Class/slotnut.html
I have all the stuff in Georgetown and could loan it out - but I am far away from my Georgetown garage for another 6-8 weeks
Setting backlash is easy.
The pinion nut needs a lot of torque

Thanks for the offer Harald. That's very generous of you. In the mean time, I'll keep trying to find someone in the san Diego/LA area. If I continue to hit a dead end, then a trip to beautiful Georgetown will be planned during the summer months!
