Now off to lubricating the door latches. No problem, I have the little nipple fitting that you insert and inject, starting from the passenger front working clockwise and then I notice on the driver's door of which there are no zerks in the hinge. They have been replaced, as I can the bolts are missing red paint like the rest of my G. My question is: How do you lubricate the hinges on a W463 ? I am assuming that is the replacement hinge that has been installed. Mike

The hinges on my G are really tight. I've tried spraying grease from a can with not much luck. Grease running down door. Then I tried oil, it helped a little but didn't do the job. I not sure what to try next.

Maxwell Smart Date registered: Dec 1899 Location: Vehicle(s): | Re: Door hinge grease zerks Wish I had those grease points on my 463. I've been using some of Roughnecks super duper secret formula liquid lube spray and if you do that and keep opening and closing the door it eventually works its way in and the door gets easier and easier to shut. But yes you need to have rag handy to mop up all the brown gunk that comes dripping out... But I still need to have the front doors open to let the pressure out when I shut my rear door.

A light close would latch the door but still leave a gap and wasnt closed all the way. I would then slam a bit harder of which would wake all the neighbors at night. I looked in the workshop manual and tried adjusting the lower closing element as per the illustrated instructions and that made it worse. I then noticed that the closing element in the door frame(body) and that which mounts on the door itself wasnt aligned...such that the center part of the part on the door was not centered with that on the pillar. I than aligned the two pieces and lightly loosened that on the pillar to be even with the pillar end(outside direction). I tightened to the point I could lightlyy tap with a small hammer inward until I was happy with how the door shuts. It now closes with the same degree of firmness required on all other doors. Elevatorbernie coined the best phrase which is "...smooth like butter and tight like a bank vault using the force of a firm handshake" On one other note, my W126 doors shut tight as well and require a firm shut as the air inside prevents closing with a casual flip of the fingertips by which the newer cars and suvs today seem to allow. Lastly, an old Mercedes enthusiast once told me that he has always used the handles on the inside and outside for closing doors as opposed to door/window edges or body panels....whenever I dont practice using the handles I usually end up having to reshut the door. My 83 does not. To avoid welding new hinges seems like you could tap the pin out of the hinge and replace that half of the hinge with one that has a grease point. That is the bolt on side. Mark

I put a little oil in each of those a couple times a year and work the door back and forth to draw it in. I don't have a picture, but if you search here and BWF you'll probably find one. This has been discussed before. -Dave G.

It is used by airplane mechanics and is supposed to be the best. It is used to prevent corrosion on electrical boards and they fog it on the inside of alloy wings to protect them. I have been a big fan of Triflow and ZEP Twister over the years but this stuff might be a lot better. It isn't supposed to attract dirt and is a penatrating lube as well. Might be the stuff for those hinges that don't have a grease fitting. They have a website; www.corrosionx.com. -Dai
