Turbo Question for my Newley rebuilt engine

So things are working themselves out but I did notice that there is some oil coming out of the cold side of the turbo.
Why the hell would it be going that ? ? ?

RE: Turbo Question for my Newley rebuilt engine

The picture is a little dark, but it looks like the oil is comming from the hot (pressurized air) side of the turbo. It looks like you have possibly two issues... one, if oil can get out around the seal to the intake, so can air, so, that seal is not holding properly, and two, there is oil bypassing the turbo's bearings. Was the turbo rebuilt? If so, call who ever rebuilt the turbo and tell them about it (I rebuilt 20 or so turbos last year, and none of them leaked oil after installed). If the turbo wasn't rebuilt, you might get lucky and the bearings just not seated well after sitting dry for a long period of time, if that is the case, watch for oil consumption and blue smoke at the exhaust, if either exist after engine break-in, the bearings are probably weak in the turbo, causing oil to bypass (and you need a turbo rebuild ). If you feel up to it, you might take the tubing off of the inlet side of the turbo and check the impeller shaft for lateral and end play, a little lateral play (up and down on the shaft) is expected, but there should be no end play (in and out on the shaft).

Cheers,
Ben

The Turbo is brand new per Sean at EuroTruck.
It did sot for a yeat though and was not run all to much. Like you said though the seal is bad but if it is leaking oil then it is good that the seal is bad.

RE: Turbo Question for my Newley rebuilt engine

If the turbo was new, then sat for a year and became dry, it will most likely seal back up, just keep an eye on the oil level and clean up the turbo housing so that you can look for new oil. I wouldn't replace the seal until I knew the oil wasn't leaking any more, being able to see the oil leak might be your saving grace if things do go bad.

Cheers,
Ben

Re: Turbo Question for my Newley rebuilt engine

By the way the thing has more power then my 230g ever had haha I would hope.
My wife did drive it this evening and I am worried, she liked it a lot.
I was eating lunch when I came out there was a group of duPont scientist types looking at it. I asked "You like"
One answered " you know the only curve on that thing is the tires" They did however love it

Those fans may have created the best G description ever : "...the only curve on that thing is the tires"
I'll put it on my web site right away.
The only rounded lines on this truck are found on the tires

Mind you these are the people that make things like Kevlar and all.
I knew the guy that invented the nylon tapered bristle he wanted a better broom for his house. Now look at every paint brush.
It is amazing what people come up with let it be a line or a nylon bristle
Another thing that maybe only G owners may know is the flat windshield is great, no distortion

Re your Turbo, Did you clean out your intercooler and all the pipes before refitting your turbo, if not then your new turbo just did.

Really????

Merz-Ben - 4/23/2007 5:10 PM ....I rebuilt 20 or so turbos last year, and none of them leaked oil after installed..... Cheers, Ben

You wanna do one for me?  I'm not joking.  I have a spare center section I could send you.  Mine is sloppy leaky with a rebuilt turbo (from turbo city in CA).  I installed it per the directions and pre-filled the turbo with oil, rotating the compressor by hand to wet the bearings and topping up the center housing before replacing the oil line and starting the engine, and after starting let it run at idle without touching the throttle for a good 10 minutes.  The thing has pumped oil out the wastegate pot line all over my RHS motor mount since day one and all I get from people I ask about it is, "they all do that".  You're the first one I've heard talk of garret T1 (or is it 2?) style turbos like we have runing externally dry.

Give me a shout off list if you'd be interested in taking a crack at this spare center section I have.  I hate the mess the current one is making.

RE: Really????

Dave

Are the seals of your return line new or in good shape? Most of the 617 turbo leaks are from the gasket on the bottom of the turbo where the return line bolts on to it and the o ring in the sleeve further down. check those before rebuilding the turbo.

also make sure the return line is not clogged..

Bottom line you need to get to the bottom of this. It does not take long to distroy a turbo if there is oil problems.

Also from that picture it looks as if the hole housing is cracked and it oil is coming out of the crack?

RE: Turbo Question for my Newley rebuilt engine

KERR,

The "crack" would be the casting seam on the aluminum compressor housing, the oil is comming out around the seal to the intake pluming and running down the seam.

Cheers,
Ben
