Vibrations?

I have some peculiar vibrating behaviour. It' s not so much vibrating as bouncing actually. It occurs between 72 and 77 km/h gps measured.

There is no sound or humming or any kind of vibration before or after this speed interval, at 78 - 80 km/h it is dead still. Feels like bumps in the road or soft washboards and bounces quite violently. My transfer knob does not vibrate so I dont think its drivetrain related anyway. My driveshafts are good and greased, bearings a little on the loose side, but nothing that would cause a pronounced up and down movement. I suspect tires maybe, but recently had them balanced. Any other theories or should I find a different tire shop?

RE: Vibrations?

Sure sounds like tires to me. Have you checked the backside of the rims for accumulated mud etc.? It doesn't take a very big dirt clod to really mess up the balance.

If you recently had a balance done, it is possible a wieght has fallen off, you could look for a clean spot where a weight may have taken leave.

Rare on modern tires but possible is a belt seperation internally in the tire that causes it to thump and roll oddly.

I would first return to the shop that did the balance and see if they will look at it. If they made an error maybe you can get it done free. They may not be a bad shop, I would start there.

RE: Vibrations?

I agree with Brent take it back and have them check their work.

Additionally can you pinpoint the particular area that you feel it? Front, Back, Left, Right?

RE: Vibrations?

You seem to have so called death wobble. Usually just re-balancing tires helps.

RE: Vibrations?

Feels like its coming from the back. I'll rebalance and see if it stops.

RE: Vibrations?

I am sure you see where I am going with this. You could always put the front tires on the rear and the rears on the front and see if the vibration changes to the front then you will know that it is the tires.

Might be, tire tread separation, I had this happen to me on my dodge, it's very scary and can happen without warning, lucky for me the tread didn't come off completely; it just made a lump in one spot that was easy to spot.

RE: Vibrations?

I hit a terrible pot hole once and the tire was ok for about twenty miles but then began to shake progressively worse til it was undrivable. The tread had eventually deformed in the area where it took the hit, a giant foot long pimple on the tread, it was no longer flat across the tire but round like a really old fashioned tire.
