RE: VISCOUS FAN KEEPS TURNING.

The fan will always turn do to the fact that it is attached to the engine pulley system. When the engine is being cooled sufficiently the viscous coupling will free the engine from turning it. Thus less power is used. The fan will continue spin by the airflow and the slight friction of the fluid in the coupling but it will not be a burden on your engine.

WHY, would you want to do that, apart from the risk of injury to yourself, you may damage the fan itself or if the hose bounces off your radiator

If it's cold just stop the engine and see if the fan turns by hand.

Re: VISCOUS FAN KEEPS TURNING.

ok,the fan is turning with no intention of stopping!

i have a long clothes brush used in dry cleaning for heavy coats etc, which i gently put up against the fan and applied slight pressure and noticed the fan would not stop.

so if i turn the fan with the engine off should it turn or not?

RE: VISCOUS FAN KEEPS TURNING.

As long as the engine is running the fan will run. When the engine cools sufficiently as when you are driving down the interstate the v-clutch will release the burden of turning the fan from the engine (in other words the clutch will disengage and the fan will spin freely with minor resistence). When your G is stone cold in the driveway see if the fan turns by hand.

Do not use anything except a rubber hose if you attempt the stop the fan. Even if it stops once you release it it will begin to turn again because it is attached to the pully system. As stated above the fluid creates minor resistence in the coupling providing enough friction for the fan to turn even when cold. At this stage the engine is not shouldering the burden of turning the fan.

RE: VISCOUS FAN KEEPS TURNING.

Alway like your site Klaus. I was looking @ the visco fan section last week. The PDF from the factory is a bit misleading though. You can remove the entire visco clutch and fan via the 4 bolts that attach to the flywheel without taking out the radiator or the fan shroud. Just takes a slim wrench and nimble fingers.

Mark

BTW How did is the 5 speed conversion holding up? You can PM me with your response if you like.

RE: VISCOUS FAN KEEPS TURNING.

Hello Mark,

PDF is a bit misleading, but the safest way of doing it. We have changed the clutch as well without taking out the radiator, but having small fingers or hands doesn't hurt.

The 5 speed in running fine without any problems since 15.000 Km now. I have used it for trailer pulling, offroad an onroad.

Since we have May now, the 300GE is in Summer - parking and the GE320 is my all day driving vehicle.

 RGDS

Klaus
